Drove up from London same morning expecting river to be high and coloured, or to arrive in midst of downpour, or both. Delighted to find on arrival the day was merely overcast (with temperature around 8'C) and the water conditions were fine (1 1/4 on Brecon gauge). Fished flats for the most part from 11 am to 1.15 pm (B .C) or 2.45 pm (G W) respectively. Sporadic rises to LDOs early on followed by large hatch of March Brown from say 1.50pm to 2.20 pm that brought up more of the bigger fish. A few trout still rising when GW stopped fishing. Fish caught ranged from c6 oz to 1 1/2 lb and took Taff's emerger, hare's ear/ comparadun emerger and March Brown dun. Great start to season.
PS. Other reports have also noted a perceived recovery of the March Brown population on this river in recent years. Has there been a study on this, does anyone know, and if it's true (i.e. the recovery) does the report suggest why? I'm used to these things getting worse so it would be nice...

Running at 3ft on the Llanstephan gauge but surprisingly clear. Spinning with Rapalas. No sign of salmon but took three very nice trout. At 1.30pm a considerable hatch of March Browns took place lasting until 2.15pm and perhaps after. Even in flood conditions the fish responded close to the edges. No fly rod - obviously!

Grey overcast day, no wind or rain, water level a good height, perfect! Really good march brown hatch from 11.00 for half an hour or so. Few LDO showing. Plenty of rises and 3 trout taken on small cdc dun, largest to 3lb. It's not only the fish that love march browns, the ducks love them too!

11 x trout 10-17 inches, various spiders. Today I was faced with a bit of a quandary, trying to work out some water which might be in fishing condition after all the rain and flooding. Going up the Usk as far as Brecon turned out to be good enough. It was a miserable day, with that cold gale still blowing, downstream in this case, but spiders worked well enough in slightly coloured water - Waterhen Bloa, Dark Moorgame, and especially Woodcock and Hare's Lug. I was going to report that there was no hatch at all, but I did find a solitary march brown on the handle of my spare rod when I picked it up to go home.
