The weather was awful - windy, raining and very dull, but the river was low and very clear so the fishing was limited to the deeper pools. Hard work, particularly in the top section where access is almost impossible due to fallen trees.

Despite recent rain ,river low and clear. Weed a problem coming downstream. No barbel just 3 chub between 2 of us. All chub came late afternoon and evening to luncheon meat.
Rain on and off all day.

Word of caution regarding parking, the field becomes very slippery and could cause problems for non 4WD vehicles. Just managed to get ours out.

A wet and cold day at first turning sunny. Salmon seen in Vanstone. First Chub on the fly.
Access to the upper section difficult and exit even harder. Ladder or rope would help. The parking area has been moved further downstream, making it much less convenient if reliant on car for changing gear and lunch.
Many thanks to the Wye & Usk Foundation.

WUF note - Unfortunately the parking arrangements had to be changed as a result of some anglers previously not following the specific beat instructions on the paperwork provided. ALL anglers MUST adhere to these rules or more situations like this will arise.

Barbel 6-7lbs, lovely condition. Chub 3-4lbs, very quiet due to NE wind, still, always a beautiful spot to fish.

A new day, a new beat, renewed confidence - only part of which evaporated when the boot was opened on a sodden mountain of mud-caked gear. More of it dissolved when it started raining again on the slither to the river bank. Puzzled that the Wye showed no reaction to all this rain, with a lack of pace and colour negative to barbel fishing. As on Sunday just a few chub, until a single barbel yanked the rod round and fought a worthy battle to mitigate the misery of two days of monsoon fishing.

Didn't arrive until mid-afternoon so missed the worst of the rain. Fished last two hours of the day in Fallen Tree swim and had a 5lbs 15ozs barbel on dusk. Looked comfortably bigger than a barbel of comparable weight so was surprised by reading on my scales. Nice to get one in such a short session.

We enjoyed our day and meeting the two Salmon anglers on the beat. Plenty of room and options and easy to drive to the hut in a 4x4. Bites were finicky however as soon as we moved to touch ledgering we started to hit the fish after 4pm when the bites switched on. Fish caught on double hair rigged pellet and swimfeeder tactics. Great historic beat and fantastic service from the friendly Wye and Usk staff, worth every penny! Saw one salmon leap and you will see Kingfishers all along the stretch. Had a nice pint of beer in the Moon 5 mins away on the way home.

First ever visit to the River Wye and really enjoyed it, despite heavy rain for all of the day. The conditions made the fishing tricky with plenty of debris being washed through and picking up the lines but caught two cracking chub of 4lbs and 4 1/2lbs and will definitely be back for another go.
