Area:Reservoirs

Beat:Talybont Reservoir

Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)

No. of Anglers:1

Weather was abysmal, heavy rain and gales for most of the day. Fished nymphs in the morning, missed one take on a hare's ear. Switched to lures when casting anything lighter became impossible. Caught 2 trout, both returned.

Area:Upper Wye

Beat:Llynfi Dulas Lower

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

If I had not pre-booked, pre-planned and pre-paid this particular day to fish the Llynfi Dulais I would have stayed in the hotel bar! The weather was atrocious with 20mph wind (gusting to 30mph) and bouts of heavy rain.
However, this small venue provided a very enjoyable experience. The first 50 metres were quite difficult to fish due to tree overhangs, branches and high banks but small brown trout were teased out of the shallow riffles with gold head PTNs.
Fished upstream with a simple flick of the short leader (heavier than normal due to the strong, gusting wind) allowed the weighty nymphs enough time to sink and search the turbulent water.
Having spotted a couple of rising fish I changed to a 'high vis' Klinkhammer and added the PTN as a dropper from the point fly (New Zealand style). This was a good move as 50% of the fish caught came up to the dry fly - As we all know, this is what it's all about!
Water levels were high and moving fast but after a slow start I enjoyed 5 hours of wild stream fishing (I had to rush the last part) and managed 13 fish (the largest being 5.5 inches). So much fun that I forgot about the poor weather!
All fish returned.
NB.1. This beat is best fished by wading upstream.
NB.2. Please add a marker or illustrate on the map where the beat ends - It's not that easy to find!

Beat:Upper Bigsweir

Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:1

Fished with fly and spinner. Nothing seen or touched. Water too high for wading to allow for fishing the fly down most of the favourable areas of the beat.

Area:Upper Wye

Beat:Abernant

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:3

1 WBT at 1lb plus 4 smaller. Weather conditions good if a little windy and the river very dark. All caught on nymphs, nothing rising to dry. Saw 2 good splashes from rising salmon on far bank at Alexander stretch below the layby entrance. Good easy fishing here but more difficult above and below this stretch.

One fish on and lost on fly. Another followed my friends spinner twice right to the edge and slashed at it.
Also had a lovely shad on a salmon fly safely returned unharmed.

Beat:Glan-yr-Afon

Fishing:Trout (River)

River very coloured after over night rain but did manage a fish of about a pound on a tungsten headed nymph and a couple more on and off. Lovely stretch of river but unfortunately poor conditions.
PS: Lost my trusted Rohan Pilkington hat down river so on the off chance anyone finds it would very much appreciate its return.
