Only fished in the evening. The river was up and I was surprised how much sediment was in the river - it was very dirty. Only saw a couple of fish rise with nothing caught.

3 x trout 6-9 inches. It's still all about right place and right time, isn't it? A midday stroll up the Cannop Brook on a hot, sticky afternoon carrying a rod, resulted in no rising fish being seen at all. Then near the top end, while I was waist deep in a pool, the heavens opened and rain came down like stair rods for 10 minutes. I cowered under a branch and the hood of my rain jacket. Then first one may fly was up, then a second, then a third. I put a Monnow Gosling on, although I dare say any largish fly would have done, and caught three little trout without moving from the spot. 10 minutes after that, all the muddy water from side ditches came pouring into the stream and the fun was over.

River was up 3 inches during the night and slowly rising. Fished the Ferry pool for 20 min in the morning caught a shad on the fly and many takes from other shad didn't fish rest of the day due to casting tuition.

Beat:Upper Crai

Fishing:Trout (River)

A truly delightful wild stream with good and well maintained access and a great variety of pools and runs. Occasional fly hatches but little fish activity. A cold and brisk south west wind was unhelpful. Water low and clear. Catch 0, but I will return another day.

Difficult day, 10C on the bank with a 20mph north wind and its June! Heavy rain showers all day, When the sun did come out the temperature shot up. Hatches of Mayfly and Olive, brave things. Two trout, about 1lb, hooked on a brown brass head nymph. My friend, who was fishing for salmon, had no luck and we saw no sign of salmon either. This is a very beautiful beat and we hope to fish it with the benefit of better weather another day.

Intermittent sunshine and showers, clear water. First time fishing this beat - first time fishing a 'real' river and fishing in waders! Some rising fish, a good variety of insect life, caught on gold & silver headed nymphs, Klinkhammer and May-flies. Met some of Wye & Usk Foundation workers and other friendly people. Many thanks to all involved!

First time fishing Gromain for two of us - all three of us mixed fishing ability, one old hand and one new-comer to fly fishing (me). Studded chest waders are a must!!! Would also recommend a stick.
Mixed weather, sunshine and showers with some rising fish scattered about. River running clear but apparently a little lower than normal but rising.
Plenty of insect life about. Fished and caught with mainly weighted nymphs (on droppers and New Zealand style) and Klinkhammer. Smaller fish also taking mayfly. Nothing bigger than eight inches consequently nothing kept.
A beautiful day, very friendly and helpful locals and members of the Wye & Usk Foundation. Thank you!
