1 x cock salmon 32 inches on Black and Yellow tube. A nice fresh, silver fish, rather marred by partly healed gash on the shoulder. Sunny and quite warm, with some downstream wind to trouble the casting at times, but nothing like the very strong cold wind which has made trout fishing on the Usk somewhat difficult this week. Also a huge hatch of grannom sedge, bigger than I have seen this year - need to keep mouth shut!

A lovely day; the river at just 1 foot with fish rising to march browns and occasional grammons. Fishing a wet march brown I connected and landed a superb 17" brownie; a few casts later within just a yard or two of the first I had another of similar proportions on the same fly, unfortunately this one threw the hook just short of the net. Both fish took 30 yards of line before coming under control. My last fish of the day was 12 inches and also in beautiful condition; all quite an experience and testament to the quality of fantastic brown trout to be found in the Wye!

Don Macer-Wright was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable with an infectious enthusiasm that made it a great day - no fish but that was probably more down to me than the beat!

All fish caught on the surface below the island. Broken by 3 fish using 4lb leader. Uprated leader and landed trout to one pound on Adams dry. Hatches were sporadic but as soon as fly life appeared the surface began to boil. First time on this stretch but certainly not our last. A note of caution - wading for the most part is positively dangerous!

WUF note - There is a lot of algae covering some of the bedrock sections of the upper river at present so studded soles are advised but on the whole this beat is generally good wading.

Nothing caught. Definitely chest waders would have been better than the thigh waders that I had on and that are shown in the Passport book.

I went down to the boat pool Courtfield 6.30ish Sunday evening after the wind dropped and was fishing down towards the willow run below when I caught sight of a good fish break the surface in the little bay below the moorings, which is a classic spot where fish lie and get caught. I went back up the bank, gave him 10 minutes and hooked him on the second cast but he jumped and threw the hook, sub 15lbs. Lost another this morning fishing from Thomas Wood crib 2,Upper Courtfield which was on for a very short while and I saw a good silver flash, so pretty sure it was a salmon. Both lost on barbless single hooks flying c so changed to blue and silver devon on standard treble mount and this afternoon fishing the corner run, Legg meadow, Courtfield, hooked and tailed, after a good fight of 10 minutes plus, a hen fish which measured just over 39" with sea lice. my third 20 pounder of the year!!! I put the fish at 23lbs from the chart, she was a well shaped fish but not as deep bodied as the 25lb cock fish I had from Home fishery
