Unfortunately we failed to interest any fish with dries, nymphs and bugs and it was only during a small early afternoon hatch that any rises (three in total) were observed.
As is always the case when fishing along these type of rivers it doesn't always matter whether fish are landed or not as it's all about spending the day in such wonderful surroundings. Although we saw no fish we did see an array of wildlife including kingfishers, roe deer and an otter so went home relaxed and seriously content.
Thanks as always to the WUF for helping us discover yet another beautiful part of the country.

No takes below surface so switched to dry 14 dark olive and landed 1 fish of 1 and quarter pounds at the tail end of the Chine Pool above woodstream run. Fish returned. John had 3 fish on spider 14s in the woodstream pool above bridge. All returned. Again very sparse hatch. On hols next week!!! 26th hooray.

4 x trout, all 12 inches, on spiders (Waterhen Bloa). A very difficult, cold morning, with water low and clear and sun very bright. But between 1 and 2.30 spring olives hatched off briefly, and a lunch queue promptly formed at the head of the pool. I bumped off more fish than I hooked.

On arrival the river was at good height and running pretty clear. A hatch of olives at lunchtime brought trout to surface. I rose a few but none made it to the net. It is perhaps now a little early in the season but the beat is well worth a visit.

Three well mended kelts banked and released strong kicking, lost another two fish after brief fight and two more spotted in other pools. All action from top section. Middle beat rammed with pike, six or seven close encounters, one 8-10lbs landed accidently. A day full of tight lines but no cigar. Thank you.

Lovely day to be back on the river with renewed optimism given the recent excellent catches. Salmon were showing regularly throughout the day - particilarly on the lower part of the Courtfield - although it was difficult to tell whether these were fresh or kelts out of the corner of the eye. 3 kelts came to flying c's one of which was around 40" in length. All were well mended, gleaming silver and swam off strongly. Don was as helpful as ever and kindly allowed me to fish the Wyebank beat as well. Can't wait to get back.
