Fished the beat for about three hours. Experienced the odd shower and it was windy throughout. The first fish came to my first cast at the far end of the caravan site. The second not long after - both to a small PTN. 5" and 8".
Changing to a small rust coloured Klinkhammer encouraged some real sport. Although nothing was showing on the surface the fly attracted several fish. Two unhooked themselves, a third of about 11" came to the net. A superbly coloured, fin perfect specimen.

Water level perfect and clearing after rain. May fly hatch just starting as the sun came out but strong winds made casting very demanding.
3 brown trout caught between 3 rods 2 of about 4" returned, 1 of just over 1lb retained. All caught on Mayfly, dry fly.

Water 0.74m and coloured. Some trout rising and landed 2 at 3/4lb on dry rough olive size 12 above rock casting upstream. Allowed fly to go below me and a fish of 2lb 3 oz took the fly as it began to skate. Grassed this fish after a 10 min battle.
All fish caught between 12 and 1pm. John concentrated on salmon with no result fishing until 5:30.

2 small trout cuaght - 1 x 1.5 pound on dry and smaller one of 3/4 pound on a surface fished wet. Conditions on 1 of the days was good but high river levels later in the week made fishing difficult/impossible.

Cold morning. No fish to be seen. Warmed up at about 13.00 hrs with lots of fly life. A brown dry fly with a gold thorax was very effective. We found that only the top end of the beat was fishable.

Blank. An interesting morning, though, when I really thought I might be in with a chance at times. Showers had provoked a slight "quick and dirty" rise in the level, although it was falling again by afternoon. One big trout banged into the fly as I was fishing down the top pool. Working through the run leading down to the Chine, a very large, though coloured, salmon showed itself once in front of me, as though excited by the rise in level....but didn't take. Below the bridge, I had a series of half-hearted nudges at the fly by what I think Falkus would have called a Hamlet fish. Stood there trying for him with different angles and different sizes of fly, rested, backed up etc, but he never did make his mind up to have it!
