Fished from 5am to 9:15 when work intervened and had to go. Lost a fish in front of wood crib, looked bright and about 8-10lb or so. Landed a fish of about 15lb. that had started to just get some color on a flying C. Saw several fish moving in various locations mostly jumpers coming clear out and not much heading a tailing. Never did make it up to the meadow section so may have been some milling around in there, who knows. Water height was great, color so-so. Another lovely dawn on the Wye.

The passport tell us that this is a long beat ... it's not ... it's a very, very long beat! Probably best fish with a partner so that a car can be left at each end otherwise it's a long road walk back to the beat start! The day started slowly but as the air temperature rose the fly life exploded - Mayfly duns and spinners, olives of all sizes, stoneflies, sedges, alder ...much like the index of a fly identification book. I started at 9:30 and finally reached the beat at at the Bridge Inn, Michaelchurch Escley at around 17:30 and I feel I barely scratched the surface of the never ending pocket water, riffle and pools. Fish rose steadily and I finished with more than 20 to a variety of flies. I was impressed by the general size of the fish, at least half a dozen at 12" plus. I persisted with a dry fly all day but I will return and investigate the deeper pools and pockets with a nymph ... who knows what lurks there?

Fished one rod in the end and caught 7 WBT, all on pheasant tail nymph and all at the top end of the beat. Things went very quiet after around 3pm. All fish under 3/4 pound but lost a couple of better fish. Saw a fresh dead salmon half eaten by (probably) an otter. Looks to be good fly water for salmon in the right conditions. In over summer flows wading the bottom end (best dry fly water) is a very deep wade!
Will fish this beat again.
