Beat:R52 Crai Lower

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Found the upper Crai in excellent condition with a good flow of clear mountain water. Conditions very hot and bright. Prolific olive hatch from 11am onwards. Resisted and "unmatched the hatch" with a para adams which resulted in 16 wbt, the majority 6"-8".

Beware of the horse flies when changing at the bottom of the beat!!

Arrived early full of anticipation for our first trip to the Wye this year ,only to find the river up by about 3 foot and pushing through. So the next stage was to find 4 fishable swims, so having walked the beat we all settled into the middle section. So out with the bait dropper and in with the hemp followed by the pellets. The fishing was very slow to start, but as ever with barbel fishing when you are not paying attention to your rod you are at risk of losing it (pouring a cup of tea), the rod was hooping over and I was quickly greeted by my first wye barbel for the year in pristine condition and weighing between 6-7lbs. By the end of the day I managed 11 barbel and numerous chub, best fish went 8-14 with 3 others over 8 as well. I do believe the volume of hemp put in helped keep the fish in the swim and the hook bait was nothing larger than 8mm .
