Beat:R24 Hindwell Combe

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

I always liked the Hindwell which, as the WUF directions explain, is spring-fed and tends to have a fairly regular flow. A good place to go when other streams are affected by flood or drought. It's great to have a second Hindwell beat now and I was gratified when I arrived to find plenty of cold water sliding over clean gravel, instead of the low flows and slimy river beds which the drought has produced elsewhere. It was early in the morning and a cold wind was blowing upstream - nothing much rising, but fish were prepared to come up to a prospective Klinkhammer. I missed a lot, including pricking a big one I saw whizzing back under his tree roots, and ended up with just 5 trout, mostly 9-10 inches, all with that nice white halo around the red spots characteristic of fish in this system. A bull in the field on the way down to the start seems to be fairly amiable - at least he's a Hereford and has his wives with him, which I take as a good sign. Otherwise, I noticed the hawthorns are up, St Mark's day having already passed. Classic border fishing.

Good day on the water. Decent wind brought some terrestrials onto the water and reasonable success given the very very low water. About 30 fish caught in total biggest 1lb brown trout. Some out of season grayling. Wye looking beautiful as ever...Czech nymphing (caddis patterns), NZ style (klink, hawthorn, black gnat, elk caddis)and size 18 skinny nymph and PTN and GRHE.
Pray to the rain gods to improve fishing prospects!

Sunny day but with strong winds developing, making casting difficult at times. Not many fish rising, but fish starting under water about 10x from bank. Fished for about 2 hrs taking 5 fish on wet flies on a floating line. Typical successful flies were teal and black and peter ross.

A tough afternoon fishing on what is a stunning beat of the Usk. The few fish we found rising were very selective and were not going to take anything that didn't look 100% right.
This is a very long beat with some great looking runs that must have surely had some big fish lurking in them.
Would be nice to return to complete the top half of the beat hopefully with a bit more water in the river.
5 trout between us up to 12" but non of the famous Usk lumps we'd hoped for.

Vain hope of Salmon but needed the casting practice! Also tried for trout and a few small brownies caught near the bridge plus a salmon parr.

Small rises throughout the day but no fish taken. They were pipping for a black gnat off the surface but weren't interested in anything else. Excellent day out though despite lack of any takes but will definitely be back when the water is higher.

Two small Brown Trout (C&R). River very low. Sun very bright. Had I been able to fish in the evening I'm sure it would have been better. I was not happy to have campers from the downstream field walking well upstream throwing stones into the water. I asked them not to and they did stop.
