Beat:Honddu Lower Henllan

Fishing:Trout (River)

New to the Honddu and first choice was the Lowe Stanton beat but 2 other anglers just beat me to it, so I headed upstream to Lower Henlon and then Llanthony in the afternoon. River level high but clear. Winkled out one WBT of about 10 inches on nymph.

Short afternoon session. Caught in a hailstorm, but once you're in the river there's not much point in getting out. 2 WBT on heavy nymph.

Area:Usk

Beat:Dinas

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:2

Very strong downstream wind all day made casting very difficult. Water coloured but not too badly. All fish caught using French Leader with nymphs and with largest trout to 2Ibs. Hatch of March Browns lasted all of 5 minutes and was only in the one location.

This visit to Abernant represented the triumph of optimism over common sense! A four hour drive from London brought me to this very well kept upper Wye beat. A few days before, I had decided to stop checking the river gauges and just trust my instinct, so I was disappointed to find the river a foot higher than I had expected and with more than a hint of colour. Nonetheless I covered the lower parts of the beat, Lady Alexander’s Catch and Stone Catch, thoroughly with fly on fast sinking line and spinner. The fly brought three trout, two of which of a decent size and beautifully marked. Unfortunately, the water on the upper parts of the beat, was too deep and powerful to safely wade, so left it for another day.

very windy and cold, not the best day to go fishing. Looked a really good lake and I will return before the end of the season.

River fairly high so explored upper beat rather than fished. When levels drop, access should be reasonable, if tricky.
