Area:Middle Wye

Beat:Lower Carrots & Luggsmouth

Fishing:Coarse

No. of Anglers:2

7 barbel (6 for me :-) ) and 3 chub. Water even lower than last report. Barbel still to be found tightly shoaled in about a 40 metre secton of the beat. They tended to shy away from the angler wearing the Chris Yates tweeds, though the ducks were fascinated by him for some reason.

Pre baiting the spot where we found the barbel had little effect as nearly all were caught in the pool upstream from where the bait was (only 30 yards or so). Big 22mm pellets and pellet feeder were by far the best tactic. Lost 3 Barbel, one when my despised Shimano baitrunner decided to not surrender any line due to S**t clutch system, and a big fish just clean snapped a newly tied 8lb hooklink, on a through action rod.

Biggest fish 7lb 4oz.

Biggest laugh, my fishing partner being loved by every duck in the whole stretch. He even moved from where he caught the 7+ barbel just to get away from them, but they love him long time and followed him to his new spot. :)

Lovely day again, will be interesting to see where the fish go when the levels rise.

Thanks WUF for keeping this stretch in top condition.

Beat:Middle Hill Court (R Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Caught and safely returned 15 pound carp. Bait yellow sweet corn on hair rig. Had 3 runs across the river almost lost it under the willow. Hooked about 12 feet from the bank. Lost 3 barbel, all hooked on spicy pork meat. Caught 1 chub 2 pounds on bread past, again returned safe. Saw a pike (not joking weight must have been 20 pound plus) chasing small fry, will be back to see if we can catch him.

Spotted 2 salmon they stayed close to the right bank all day.

Thank you for a great days fishing.

Beat:Wye coarse fishing trip....

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Middle Hill Court 14th, 15th - 8 barbel all in the 5/6lb range, 3 chub at around 3lb. Luggsbridge on the 16th produced just 2 chub of about 3lb and half lb respectively. Luggsmouth on 17th produced 7 barbel and 3 chub again the barbel in the 5/7lb range. All in all another thoroughly enjoyable trip. My only slight niggle is we felt the Luggs bridge fishery did not have many fishable swims, we tried to access the lower part of the beat but it is so overgrown this proved impossible. We could not find the pond which is clearly stated on the map, my general opinion is that the river looked much more acessable and fishable from the opposite bank. Would be interested to hear your comments. many thanks for all your help look forward next years trip.

One trout about 1.75 lbs. Plenty of rising fish and some good ones amongst them but very difficult to get them to take. However, a very pleasant day.

Had a great day on the Caradoc beat on Monday. 14 Barbel and 9 chub caught between 3 anglers, biggest barbel went 11lb 6oz. all fish were caught on pellet.

Lovely stretch of river, saw many salmon leaping including some very big fish. Buzzards riding the thermals, peace and quiet...lovely, will be back soon.

Keep up the good work WUF.

Beat:Skenfrith (River Monnow)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

River was low after a dry week. Weather was warm with some cloud and an occasionaly blustery wind. Very few flies hatching, a few small olives, and no rising fish.

Fished form 10.30am to 19.00pm. Caught 1 small Grayling on a Klinkhammer towards the bottom of the beat and 1 nice Brown Trout, 14", on a Daddly Long Legs fished dry in the middle reaches.

Beat:Doldowlod (upper Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

We caught 21 grayling between us (2 rods), the best of which was 17 inches and 3 trout to 1.5lbs. A lot of sedge were hatching through the day and fish rising sporadically. F-Flies were the killing pattern. The water was gin clear but running at a fairly nice height - perhaps another 4 inches of water would've made it perfect. Fish tended to hold in the slower deeper sections.

Beat:Whitehouse (River Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

River very low and clear, with bright sunshine all day made for difficult conditions. We managed to get 20 barbel (3 rods) between us, mostly on halibut pellets. Top end produced 16 barbel to 9lb 4oz for one rod. Other smaller fish from near the track by the farm. Fantastic day in hard conditions, thanks for the chance to fish this wonderful river.

Beat:Middle Hill Court (R Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

We saw a few salmon but didn't catch. My companion caught a
double figures pike which he returned. The river was completely over run with canoeists and there was a race involving six-man catamarans. We would certainly not have made the booking if we had known that. I also felt that,
whilst there was a lot of useful information on the beat description, the route to the main parking (on concrete) could have said that it is "beyond the yellow barrier". It took us a long time to figure that out. It would also have been helpful to know more about access points to the pools -
particularly The Rope and Ford Stream - which were very well disguised. We enjoyed the day but it was spoiled by these factors.
