Blanked. Only had one bite all day. Moved around, but couldn't compete with coarse anglers using worms, all over. I went there thinking that it would be bailiffed properly. However the coarse anglers were everywhere and as such no fly fishers could get any bites. Won't be visiting there again as I feel £17.50 is too much to waste on fishing where I dont even get a chance of a single bite. Pity it was too busy and like a free for all. Needs more bailiffing.
WUF NOTE: The Usk reservoir is fly fishing only at the western end. We will forward this feedback to Welsh Water.

What a glorious day to be in Wales the drive from Crickhowell to Brecon was a joy. Penpont is never an easy days fishing in my experience, but what a fantastic day to be on the water, beautiful spring sunshine and the air crisp and fresh. I intended to leave for my return to Kent about 2 ish so I targeted the pools that I had found productive in the past, caught a nice 10 inch brown on GRHE, may have missed a couple. Day seemed ripe for a hatch, waited in the warm sunshine for some fly activity, none materialised, nymphed the pool again but no success this time.
Called into to see Jean at Sweets on the way back, picked up some of her ridiculously cheap hand tied flies, as ever, an offer of a cup of tea. If you haven’t paid Jean a visit please do so, independents like this need our support. We both agreed a torrential downpour of three days duration was needed. Consensus is, from spooned fish, that they are feeding on the bottom, lots of snails apparently.

Really nice day with water level very low, we managed to see few trouts rising on sedges and managed to catch a few of decent sizes. We saw few big fishes moving on slow/deep pools but it was impossible to reach them as they were very spooky. Managed to see few big graylings raising but left them alone when we realised it was them. The fishes looked concentrated in few big pools while other looked empty. No olives or other flies moving apart from sedges.

I hope this helps.

Away to go Erik, he caught 2 trout in summer low and bright conditions in the afternoon after some casting lesson and river craft. The first was half pound the second 3.5lbs which did 4 runs of 30 metres and he handled it like a pro and considering this was only his sixth trip fly fishing. Where does he go from here?!!

We missed the glorious weather by a week, the temperature returned to the normal April cool / cold. There was however some hatching activity but very few fish showing. I caught 2 Grayling (on one cast), they obviously didn't know they were out of season. One small brownie at the end of an excellent day.
