Had a testing morning fishing in a bad downstream wind. No flies and saw just two rising trout. Caught one (8") and missed the other on a HE emerger. Nothing on nymphs in the dubs. Definitely not a beat to fish at this time of year in such low water with the riverbed gravels covered in weeds and 12 feet high Himalayan Balsam guarding all of the margins, both of which in such conditions seemed to have a great affinity for flies and monofilament! There are also a few fallen trees down across the river since the last clearance work which would be worth removing.

First day of a 3 day visit to the Wye, Neil and I caught 40 barbel to 8lb 2oz & 17 chub, with most of the fish being caught from the last few pegs, all on pellet. WE have fished the beat before and caught all along the beat but with the river very low and clear the fish seem to have shoaled up as we only had 4 of the barbel and 6 chub away from the last pegs, once we found the fish we had a wonderful days fishing, & once again many thanks to W.U.F for their excellent service.

Fished Maddox with meat for a couple of hours early evening. Had two barbel (7 & 6lb) and a chub (2.5lb). Weather was overcast with rain at times. The banks are quite overgrown but the fishing is good where you can get into the water!

A lovely day, and my first on a river since a major operation. River very low and clear but one missed take and one 9" trout, safely returned, made it a day to be grateful for. I saw two fish, each rose once, and showed no further interest. I caught on a caddis, a bit like a leaded elongated Black and Peacock
Sorry, I forgot to do a return.
The stretch below the ford is very securely protected by barbed wire and thick undergrowth so I waded down the river and then gave it a while to recover. Probably not very conducive to success.

Sun and cloud, not too much wind and the water very low. Almost the only insects seen, until the arrival of the late afternoon and evening sedges, were two Yellow Mays so, unsurprisingly, hardly any rising fish - so on the face of it the prospects didn't look too good! However, in spite of all this, I still rose fish all day to a couple of HE emerger patterns which also accounted for anything that rose as well. Had nothing take the nymphs when adopting NZ tactics. From about 5 p.m. there was a reasonable evening rise which continued until I could no longer see my fly. Remarkably, over the course of the day, I had 35 grayling from about 9 to 15" and five trout to 12" - all returned. The best two grayling were saved almost to the last, when I also dropped two other nice fish because I really couldn't see my fly - they were barely hooked and it was a case of long distance release....so, time for home! A cracking day.
