Area:Usk - Wild Stream

Beat:Parc Fishery

Fishing:Trout (River)

First time for me on this beat and a cracker it is too I think . Definitely high gradient and definitely so below the bridge but huge fun to fish up it ! Moved quite a few in the pots and runs but damn they where fast ! Or maybe I was just plain slow in the heat...
Definite change of character above the bridge and waterfalls there with quite an amazing amount of great really fishy looking runs and pools as you work up. Good size and depth to them too.A fair bit of troublesome tree cover about though and would be fabulous indeed if it had just a bit of a trim back!
Not as bad as some of the other wild streams I feel which really are getting more than quite difficult these days in places which is a pity. Grumble over...
I just couldnt buy a bite up there though today to any usually effective dry terrestrial pattern. I'm sure they must be there, waters just too good looking not to be but can only hope goosanders/otter havent nobbled too many.
Riverbed and wading was great. No algae!Any bugs on the rocks and stones seemed fairly sparse though.
At the big 'hump' the second field (or was it third? cant recall now but you wont miss it!) I found it best to drop in the river there were the fence line goes down to the river and wade up, its fine , a bit tough going and very very wild and woolly up there but some lovely little pools/runs up there though.
Really looking forward to getting back on it and find those elusive fish. Maybe its a bit more of an early season stream like the mainstem Usk? Only one way to find out !
Felt like quite a 'long' 3/4 mile stretch too me too.
Oh , and if one does wade up past the 'hump' its not too much of a slog walking back up the hill and field on the way back downstream.

Interesting, long beat. Lots of walking and different stretches/conditions. Was fishing this with a friend who caught more in the morning than in the evening. I caught more in the late afternoon and early evening myself. Bright, hot and sunny again.

The track from the parking area to the river is very steep and a bit of an obstacle course. Once we reached the river we found
just one swim that was even close to being fishable. It looked far from safe and there were two of us so we didn't even bother getting the gear out the car.

I think some real honesty regarding poor access to the river and the fact that most of the bank is very overgrown would be welcome. Advice to travel light is not enough. Allowing several hours work with a brush cutter would be better advice.

Would not book this stretch again.

Managed to catch 1 good sized trout with nymph, and 2 smaller trout in some of the upstream sections. Weather was direct sunshine so fish were not rising.

Strewth a hot one when i parked up at twenty to twelve this morning!!! Reading 28 in my truck then !!
River looking a picture to be honest.... a bit low but hey, better than last September, so can't moan !!
Fished my usual six foot and a tiny Para pheasant tail , did the job perfectly and some lovely splashy rises to it. There were a few olives and plenty of sedge about by one .... Edw fish are always full on, hammer it or not at all ....the heads of the pools producing Savage takes .... some nice fish too in the tally of seven, chunky ten inch fish, lovely markings on these Edw fish.... and not surprisingly totally different from their cousins up at The Hundred House beat ......
Lots of squirrels seen and you know it's warm when the cattle are sat tight in the shade of the trees in the field ..... in fact they hadn't moved far when I got out at the Hergest Falls ....and they looked hot and flustered just like me !!! The cold can of pop went down a treat in my cool bag, lovely job .... a fun three hours on a secretive beat ..... Will try another one tommorrow, see whats available after six ... Right, got a hedge trimming job to do, so onwards and upwards..... ohhh there's a bottle of amber nectar in the fridge, once this gardening job is nailed .... Happy days .......

All fish caught on a Parachute Adams. Tried a little nymphing and some other dry patterns but no joy - clearly the Adams is the one to go for.

River was low but easily fishable - fished the upper beat - about a third of it - plenty of fishy spots and decent fly life.

Couldn't see a way to get past the iron footbridge about a third up the beat - properties to both sides so was reluctant to trespass and it was too deep (for me) to wade. Having said that I had a really good day just on that first third of the beat. Also couldn't find a way down to the river that didn't involve climbing over barbed wire - maybe my fault but I did ask at the Trout Inn.
