Only had a couple of hours to try at the end of a weeks holiday and sadly lost a decent fish at the Vanstone Pool! No others showed.

A busy Kingfisher also frequented the pool.

A dank old day with drizzle for most of but good fishing conditions although the river was at 0.4 (RoW) and nearly all the colour gone. Two fished down the bottom and one up the top. Slow in parts but with a couple of moves for 2 of us, barbel came late. They were split 7, 3, 3 with two of the 7 coming in the last two casts approaching 1800 inc a last fish of 10.01 on the second 'just one last cast'. Of the rest Steve had an 8.14 and all the rest were between 3 and 6. Chub to 4lb.
GB feeders worked for 2 of us, loose feeding pellets over the top. The other one caught late using a blackcap and hemp. Fish fell to spicy sausage or halibut pellets. A satisfying day where confidence, patience and knowing when to move paid off. Thank you WUF.

I wandered down the swim and thought the gravelly stretch before the rapids would be somewhere to winkle out a sole barbel but wouldn't hold fish. Given the weather I cast out anyway and had a chublet, then after no activity packed up and wandered down to the end peg on Foy common. There was an enormous shoal of chub across the whole river, 25 chub is an estimate but it could have easily been far more had I prepared hook lengths and been a more competent angler. I wasn't out to haul fish out of the river all day like it was a match. The cherry on the cake was a 3lb 2oz perch, a greedy dace even snaffled an 8mm pellet. Every chub that came out on the common was between 4lb and 5lb. I then moved back to the bridge in the hope to catch a barbel and wasn't disappointed. 2 chublets, a barbel and a sole roach from the reedy gravel swim. Fantastic days fishing.

Although I only caught one fish, a barbel 6 lb 9 oz, I had a cracking day on this lovely fishery. I had to stop early to celebrate my son’s birthday which I totally forgot when booking the day ticket. Lesson learned ????
