It was a cool (10 degs) and mainly heavily overcast day. A sparse hatch of midges, olives plus the odd march brown came off between about 12n and 1:30pm. The trout were mildly interested and a few rose (albeit most were oncers). I got one trout of between 13 & 14” on a dry (16# gingler) but to my surprise nothing on nymphs. My mate fared similarly. A lovely beat, I enjoyed fishing it.

Typical early March day on the Usk. Grateful the river was at a good fishable height given the rain recently. Reasonable hatch of LDOs & a few March Browns between 1-2pm. Hooked and lost one right in the tail of a pool on a dry. Then landed another. Not a monster but got the season up and running.

Unusually, , all fish (best a 9lb barbel) caught in the middle of the day from the top stretch. High banks treacherous due to steepness and mud - was glad I had my rope and spike with me otherwise an involuntary swim was highly likely

Mostly when using bread flake. Winter detritus in known barbel swims, at lower end of beat. No barbel takes. Fished well for chub, thru day. Serene day. Our thanks.

Lovely conditions on a dry and overcast day with the fish seeming to be on the feed. All anglers started at the top end working their way down the stretch ending in the castle and beach swims. Chub caught in all swims on the stretch with average size of 3/4lb. All barbel fell to one angler at the bottom end of the stretch. Feeder and pellet tactics used fishing in the slacks. Great days fishing.
4 Barbel, 8 Chub
