Fished from 08:00 til 13:30. Started at the bottom of the beat and worked my way up to the bridge. Fish were topping for the first two hours consistently but would not take anything I put in front of them, no obvious fly life around to match other than some tiny black gnats which I couldn't match for size. dry and wet fly's no good. Switched to a Red Neck PT nymph and had a bite but after a couple of spectacular jumps this came off. River was low and wadable along the whole length, a couple of waist deep pools needed to be worked around. Great venue just a poor show from the fish on the day, will be back. Dog walkers were a bit of a pain.

First trip today to the Upper Wye having spent the season so far on Gwent AS's waters on the Usk. River clear, low and still remarkably cold for early June at just ten degrees..brrr.... given the leak in my waders (the Usk above Abergavenny two days ago was still only 13). Just a few, very few, upwings from small olives to YMs and OUs (no sedges), and so hardly a fish rising. However, apart from one fish caught bugging, the rest (rising or not) were taken on a size 18 HE emerger and Goran's Sedge. Grayling from 10-14" and trout from 10-13", plus a beautiful, rising 20" three pound trout to make a hard day's fishing very worthwhile.
P.S. two evenings ago on the Usk, there was a significant evening hatch of BWOs plus sundry spinners, and the river came alive by 9 p.m. with fish taking both, during the hour before dark. Well worth getting out now for the summers evening's patrol!
