Excellent days fishing river still low but with a decent colour this beat is rammed with chub found it difficult to get through them to locate the barbel but still a very enjoyable days fishing.

Overcast, strong downstream wind and cold for time of year. Wind made dry fly hard (for me). Nymph most of the time but no fish seen, heard or felt. Nice beat and the first time I have blanked on it. Will be back.

The Wye was quite low with bit of colour. Weather was cool, cloudy and breezy. I made my way to a swim in the last field where there was quite a good mid-stream flow. I had not fished here for several years. Started fishing about 15.30 with chub bites from the off, though quite a few missed. A barbel came along in late afternoon but its mates must have moved on. I changed swims for the last couple of hours and caught another barbel , but again just the one.

The "other"? This was a very feisty perch that brightened up an otherwise quite ordinary day. Its behaviour was most un-perch like; I hooked it in the middle of the river in the fastest water on a static halibut pellet. I did not weigh it, but it was a lovely specimen that must have been very close to 2lbs. It's surprises like that that makes fishing so absorbing!
