Managed a couple of hours early morning in the pouring rain. River in good order, banks very slippery. At least I got the season off to a productive if wet start.

River conditions looked perfect, calm, overcast day ideal after wet start, angler needs practice ! Chub fell for various spicy meats, barbel not so gullible.

This was a surprisingly poor day. I usually find that overcast and stormy conditions can lead to hatches of fly and general activity. Sadly this didn't happen. There were a few yellow Mayflies, (not yellow May Duns) and I saw 2 large trout porpoising. No sign of salmon though. I really thought that after the rain in June fish would have been brought to the upper reaches. I've seen just one salmon this year, and that was on the Usk.

River fairly high and coloured but fishable the chub were ferocious every where we tried and the barbel harder to come by probably couldn’t get past the chub to the bait!! Most on feeder tactics, even heavy rain couldn’t dampen another great day on the wye.

Cracking day on this beat. Rained all morning and it somehow got through my waterproofs.
Love this beat for the peace and wildlife and fish it at least once a season. All fish coming in the morning (I don't seem to catch after about 1300hours on this beat and I've been fishing it for the past 5 seasons).
Salmon jumping all day along beats 3, 4 and 5 it was amazing to see how high they were getting.
If I didn't have a 4 hour drive back home I would have stayed till sunset.

Area:Monnow
Beat:Monnow Valley
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Probably not the best day to attempt this river , constant rain and the water very coloured, i wasn’t feeling confident.
But what a privilege to just be here , the monnow valley is just stunning , what an incredible place . The access points are marked out very well but I found some were quite tricky to enter . I’ll give it another go once the river has cleared
