good hatch at my arrival around 10am, but no sign of a fish raising. Just landed a decent brown trout with heavy nymph, and nothing else. Water still pretty cold.

I found it difficult today, the weather was ok, typical April sunshine and light showers, quite breezy too. The river was as a healthy level and pushing through very strongly.
Spent most of the morning waiting and watching for a hatch as I was confident there’d be one around midday but midday came and went. Then around 1pm a few small grey upwings started to appear, they weren’t big enough or in sufficient numbers to get the trout excited where I was so I moved on until I noticed a small rise in a slower deeper part of the river, a bit of very stealthy wading had me in position and able to present a small dry to the odd rising fish, all of which took my offering but sadly I missed 3 and lost one, then the small hatch was over and no more fish were seen.
A pleasant enough day even with the constant scream and drone of motorbikes with a little bit of action but no fish landed.

My day at Usk reservoir was cold, wet and windy and a stark contrast to the previous sunny days. Having said that I always enjoy my time fishing here, a place where you can truly feel that you are out in the wilds, stunningly beautiful and this time I was lucky enough to see a Goss Hawk.
So just one very hard fighting overwintered trout on damsel fly and fast glass intermediate, and around a dozen perch which became quite annoying after a while.
The littering up there is becoming a real problem and I am sad to say this is mostly fishermen. I saw two groups of fishermen pack up and go leaving drinks cans, crisp packets, plastic bags and burning fires behind – Why do people think this is OK to do this? Welsh Water – you can enforce permits so start enforcing some litter regulations otherwise people will stop fishing here. Among the more interesting pieces of rubbish that I found was a high quality plastic container that I thought I could recycle and use as a bait container. However, after closer inspection I discovered it was an Urn from the crematorium. It beggars belief that following the scattering of someone’s remains into our drinking water, the container has been discarded on the bank. I have left it in the fishing hut.

WUF note: Many thanks for clearing up, it's a real shame that a few will spoil it for the many.

Endeavoured to walk all this short beat from the bank, The upper section is a jungle of willow, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam and only fishable by wading which would need lower water levels to attempt, I think. Good hatch of (probably) medium olives middle of the day and some large spinners in the air ( MB ? Book dun ?) Proximity to the A40 means this beat is noisy at the weekend as it is a favourite race track for the motor bikers. Will come back mid week on a drizzly day when water levels are lower !
