Hot sunny/ broken cloud water level low. Little fly activity all day but enough sporadic rising to have some fun. Most fish rising in smooth open shallower water . Very choosy! One really good fish and a couple of medium sized on size 14 Adam’s. Very few mayfly and fish not interested in them.

Then from about 7pm till it was too dark to see there were lots of rising fish. Still very choosy but managed to connected with a large number although only six more made it to the net. Size ranged from 9-14” all in great condition. Fish only interested in small fly patterns 14-18 sedge/clinkhammer/ and Adam’s all caught fish.

Arrived around 9:00am and spotted rising fish towards the bottom of the beat in the slacker water. Put on an olive emerger and caught a brownie of around 11" in the shallows. Continued with no more luck. Fish continued to fish sporadically throughout the day - no major fly hatch. Tried other dries and nymphs - no luck. Pretty spot. Low water levels.

Great to kick off our fishing weekend at Glanusk, which is a very varied beat. There was not much of a hatch from 12pm when we began to assemble. 3 fish up to a pound fell to PTN nymphs. The evening hatch however was excellent. A real smorgasbord of pretty much any fly you can think of, with the trout rising freely in the lower stretches of the lower beat. However, working out exactly what they were rising to was much harder. I think I changed my fly about 7 times! We picked up a couple eventually on small pale olive dries but I suspect they were feeding on spinners that we had no pattern for. A good day and on to Dan y parc for the next days fishing!

Guiding the WUF auction lot winners during the day. Commiserations to John who lost a belter in the Chain and to Dudley who tried hard and fished well, but the fish were just too flighty in the low water and bright sun, but congrats to Paul for his 5 nice fish to just over the pound. During the day we spooked a number of notably large fish and despite trying to get them to stay for the evening, they had to leave at 7 to drive north. I decided to stay and fish the spinner fall.

First fish started mopping spinners around 20.30. I eased into the Salmon pool and ignored several mid sized fish and targetted a large fish moving around the overhanging willow. When I finally got my jingler to intersect with its feeding route it was taken. substaintial mid river sloshing was followed but a powerful run up the pool and a jump showing a fish comfortably over 4lb! It then turned and headed for the willows and there was nothing I could do. The pool was now dead, so I headed up to the Run. Fish were feeding hard along the inside seam. after a couple of 12oz fish I saw a better one move and cast to it. It took and i missed the strike, but it continued feeding! On the third attempt I connected and a butter fat 16" fish of just over 2lb was the result.
Headed back to the salmon pool and a couple of good fish where moving on the inside. The one that took the jingler was a skinny 22"er that could quite pull the scales to the 3lb line. The fish kept on feedind and there was a good one tracking up the shingle on the far side. It took the jingler first cast and the first slosh showed it was substaintial. A good scrap followed and I was far enough away from the snags that it never made them and a superbly conditioned 20.5" 3lb 1oz fish was the result. It was almost 21.45 now and despite several other good fish moving I was sated and didn't cast again. This is why you have to fish late at this time of year.

River is lower than I have ever seen it. Bed is clean and sparkling where there is flow but slime appearing in the margins.

Plenty of insect life around and fish were rising although they soon disappeared if the fine and far off approach was not adhered to. The trout were all beautiful tubby fish… biggest 13”. A few may fly about and fish starting to take them. Went really cold late afternoon but there was a big spinner fall late on. Great fishing!
