Further challenging conditions with the river low and clear. One angler blanked but others caught with the fish obviously shoaled in some spots and absent in others.

This was a birthday treat for my son (11 at the time) and my daughter (9) and their first time on the Wye. I've fished this stretch several times in the past and have caught lots of barbel and chub, the last time I fished here was summer of 2012 so a long time ago!

The river was low and clear but with a lot of pace and strong flow across its entire width. Started on feeder hoping for a barbel but didn't feel entirely confident. Moved downstream to slower water and persevered until around 1pm on feeder, only one bite but straight into a snag.

River was low and clear and looked good for a fish so a change to float tactics resulted in my son's first Wye chub at 2lb 4oz followed by a few more at similar weights. My daughter then took the rod and, as she struggled with her casting I cast for her and coached her on how to trot as it was her first time river float fishing. After a lot of dedication her casting became outstanding and she was rewarded with her first ever solo caught chub at 1lb 8oz and we were all delighted.

My son had the next trot and hooked his new PB chub of 3lb 4oz.

They fished until the darkness came and it arrived all too soon... the float gear will make an appearance earlier in the day next time! We finished with 8 chub landed and one lost at the net. A great first Wye adventure for them and I'm sure the first of many!

Fishing Passport Note : A wonderful report and fantastic pictures. Thank you James, the smiles say it all!
