River low and clear but weather very mild and cloudy so did not know what to expect. Turned out to be a very good afternoon with barbel to 9lb-3oz on pellet and feeder. However, they switched off early and I caught a solitary chub in the last hour and a half. Just the same a great session on a lovely stretch of the Wye.

Beat:Ty Newydd

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:2

Ty-Newydd at its most picturesque on this mild, autumnal day. Heavy nymphing between Gravelly Pool and Bachawy brook resulted in steady catches throughout the middle part of the day. Mostly small and medium sized fish but with one out of season Trout topping a pound. At one point, fishing a team of three nymphs MT had two fish on the same cast. Not that unusual except on this occasion a ‘mixed brace’ one a Grayling and the other a Trout - there should be a name for that!

A couple of Salmon provided an acrobatic side show. The (temporary) gate arrangement near Bathing Pool is something of a ‘death trap’.

O.k, arrived about midday to find a hired van parked in the usual parking space and sure enough there was 2 guys fishing with all the gear with no tickets, not impressed! They packed up and guessing they probably been fishing here all week along with the foreign speaking fisherman in the last feedback . Having fished about 10 different beats I haven't seen any bailiffs or private WUF signs at all which I think is a must to deter people from abusing these lovely beats. Sorry to have a moan but my local club has this in place and it works. Anyway, caught some nice big chub on meat in nice clear water conditions.
WUF Note: We were very sorry to hear about this experience. Coming across poachers is, unfortunately, a risk on any fishery, however many signs are put up. There is little that can be done about these incidents several days afterwards. We therefore urge anglers to call the EA/NRW incident line (0800 80 70 60) immediately if you come across people fishing illegally or without permission. If the incident is on a Passport beat, please also report it to us as soon as you can on 01874 712074. If you feel threatened in any way, please call the police on 101 or 999. Advice on poaching incidents is given in the “What To Do Guide” issued with every booking.
