Fishing:Trout (River)

Three rods fished and we couldn't believe the river was fishable after the day before - it was choclate brown and swollen. We had been washed off Fenny Fach on the Saturday.
Penpont on the Sunday was fine, slightly more colour but well fishable. My friends Peter and Marco mainly fished dry they both caught well, I fished mainly on nymph and caught some good fish biggest around the 2lb mark. Still lots of Mayfly around.

What a different day, overcast with heavy showers, river very coloured, very few olives hatching and no fish showing. Fortunate to be with guide Oliver Burch who knows this stretch very well with the best areas and access spots - some lovely beats but alas unable to interest fish in dries or nymphs.

Beat:Abbey Dore

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Fished with passport on Abbey Dore till early afternoon and tried a few hours later on Dulas.
In morning lovely clear water but very few hatching flies apart from midges. Only a few small fish occasionally rising and rose a couple of those - otherwise no response to dries or nymphs. Waited and watched and crept around waiting for things to improve. Moved to Dulas and situation unchanged - only a few olives and very small fish rising. Both beautiful fishy beats.

After heavy rain the day before, river up and coloured after 3ft. spate. Concentrated on the runs higher up the beat. Rises were few and far between, however, we caught 3 fish on nymph and dry, one of which took a parachute Adams and weighed in at 2 lbs. Enjoyable day, if challenging!

I came to this beat a number of years ago and it defeated the novice fisherman I was. This is a great beat but very wild and fast running water. I had taken a quick look the evening before and due to a very rainy day the Grywne Fawr was running high, fast and the colour of chocolate. This is a short river and it comes up fast and goes down fast too. 16 hours later and the river was in great nick although running fast. 13 WBT came to dry but only after a grim couple of hours on the lower part of the beat. A great beat.

Just a very short closing session on a really enjoyable 4 days fishing on WUF waters. We drove past Grywne Fawr the evening before and viewed a thundering chocolate soup from the day's rain. Surely no fishing the next day. Unbelievably arrived 15 hours later and the river was down to a fishable level and clear. Easy to wade, all fishy places offered a back cast, would allow no more than 4 hours to fish this one. Didn't really see any rising fish but tempted 6 up to a dry (Adams), one a clonker for such a small stream. Quiet and pretty, a lovely place to cast a fly.
A lovely way to end a 4 day trip with my brother-in-law - around 140 wbt between us all on dries, Kings Arms in Abergavenny a comfortable base and set in some of this island's most beautiful landscape.
