Fishing:Salmon

River slightly high, but reasonable clarity. Several fish seen, but declined the fly. The beat looks in excellent condition, due to Mick's hard work and regular management. An enjoyable day.

25+ to hand , with 6 taking beadhead nymphs until the sun broke through. Olives started peeling off at 12.30 and the trout locked onto them instantly. I netted a further 7 in this half hour period then they switched to mayfly at 1p.m. I netted a further 12 or so over the next 2 hours. Size wise all were between 7-12 inches with the better sized fish taking the mayfly pattern. the Olchon was carrying a little extra water which always helps on this beat.

Beat:Upper Arrow

Fishing:Trout (River)

Cold but sunny and bright day on the Upper Arrow near Huntingdon. Water cold. Fishing with Richard Bowen and Glyn Williams as part of May 14th Wild Streams Fishing Day. Hawthorn and midges over the stream but fish not rising. Nevertheless with expert tuition from Glyn and switch from Hawthorn fly to nymph with application of sheep wool to the line, I managed to hook two little trout, netted then returned. Many thanks especially to Glyn and to the well-organised team at the Wye and Usk Foundation. Sally Pim

Fishing:Salmon

A day with Oliver Burch guiding. Highly enjoyable and educational. Having not used a double handed rod for 4 years we dusted off the cobwebs before getting going. No salmon seen and thus none caught. MB fished for trout in the morning and hooked and lost 3. We switched rods in the afternoon. MB managed to catch a 6" trout on a 2" fly on the salmon rod!! I had 2 trout and 2 grayling, one of each were decent size 14" fish. Great fun had by all and a beautiful beat. Despite the great instruction from Oliver Burch, the best lesson learned is this: don't leave your spare rod on the bank when there are curious lambs in the field...they chewed straight through my fly line!!

Beat:Hindwell - Knill

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:2

Accompanying 2 participants to provide advice on a Wild Streams Day event, I found the Hindwell to be running clear and in good condition. Access to beat was fairly reasonable with the late spring and the sunny conditions saw a hatch of mayflies around lunchtime, although we saw no rises all day. We all caught fish - 6 to one event participant and 2 for the other with the largest around 9". I caught 1 fish with only a few casts made using a weighted nymph. This is a truly wild stream beat in beautiful surroundings.
