On what seemed what should have been a perfect day: 9" at Llanstephan, water 17 degrees (so little different to a few days ago) with not too much wind, no sun and little rain, where were the insects? Not that we expect many at this time of year but, during the latter part of last week, there were some bugs about, and so, some rises - fish were actively feeding and certainly looking up on the Upper Wye, as testified by catches above and below this part of the river, both at Craig Llyn and Ty Newydd. What a difference 48 hours or more can make? Today we struggled, with hardly a rise seen all day, virtually no insects, but no fish taken on nymphs, either using Tenkara or traditional methods. All fish were taken with olive or hare's ear emerger patterns, dead drifting traditionally or induced, Tenkara-style. We caught some grayling of 12-14" but most were ~10" and the trout were all 8-10 inchers. Few salmon parr active either, so distinctly a very off day - but why? We haven't a clue!! Answers on a postcard please!

Travelled back home today so fished the afternoon only. Managed 2 barbel from the top field then it went very quiet so moved below the woods. This is the lowest I've seen the river when fishing Sugwas so it was very interesting to be able to see the bottom in pegs I've caught from in the past.
We catapulted out some pellets in a known swim and saw 1 barbel and some chub almost immediately, however after catching 1 chub it went quiet. We fished various swims for the afternoon then when packing up at 5pm I spotted a barbel again - after putting out some more pellets we saw 6 barbel in the swim with fish flashing constantly. We quickly set up again and gave it 30mins but couldn't coax one into taking the bait.
A hard but enjoyable day and I can confidently say that if we had been fishing until dark then we would have had a few barbel. I think the low water level put the fish off feeding this afternoon.

Last day of my week's fishing holiday, first time on Ty-Newydd - stunning beat with glorious views from the fishing lodge. Tried the fast water in Gravelly run to start, but no joy there, so I headed up to just below where the Clettwr joins, and as I arrived the river sprang into life with fish rising & jumping all over. No great visible hatch so I cast my trusty Grayling Steel Blue some 20 yds (no visible rises there) and an almost instant hit resulted in a nice grayling c. 12", next 10 casts all produced almost instant takes, a mixture of grayling & trout between 10"-16" - fantastic sport, all fish in great condition & safely returned.
All went quiet again after that short spell of incredible fishing, amazing how the river can just suddenly switch on & off like that. Went home tired but happy, great end to the week - will be bback to try the rest of this beat soon!

Fishing poor again! Plenty of canoes though and boats with motors on? We don't mind the canoes if there quiet when passing, but when you're paying £22 a ticket to have people jumping in off boats and swimming through your swims its a bit of a joke to be fair!

A sweltering day with the river running low and clear. The fish took some finding, but generally came regularly throughout the day. Most fish caught on small pellets glued to the hair, rather than single larger pellets.
Largest 7lb 8oz. Most 5lb - 7lb, with one small barbel of around 12oz.

Unbelievable afternoon/evening session at one of the best beats on the Wye & Usk in my opinion. This is a day that me and my Dad will never forget.
We got to the river at 11.30am and made the long walk round the woods, eventually settling in a couple of swims at 1pm. Before I had even set up my Dad had 3 barbel and the fish seemed to be seriously having it. We then caught steadily all afternoon until about 4pm when everything went quiet. A walk around the fishery to plan our next move was in order so we spent 45mins walking the stretch then returned to get our gear.
We decided to have another cast in our original swim and immediately were back into the fish. We then continued to catch all evening, somehow passing 30 barbel, then 40, finishing on 41 barbel, 39 chub, 1 eel and 1 shimano 6000 spool hooked in the edge inside a mankey old sock!!
Can't wait to get back to this beat in September and I just hope it fishes half as well!
Also had 2 mink run between my legs - they were extremely tame, one of them was sat looking at me trying to beg some pellets I think!

River very low and clear and coupled with hot and bright weather, made conditions far from ideal. Unfortunately only one barbel between the two of us, along with a dozen or so chub.
