I have fished this excellent stretch of the Wye several times before albeit quite a few years ago. The parking is fine, actually getting to the river can be a challenge fighting the undergrowth, but once in the river the wading is easy and shallow and there are some excellent wide stretches.
The weather was bright and sunny about 15 degrees but there was a strong cold wind blowing upstream.
Grayling were the intended target, but all did not go to plan, started at 1400hrs with spider patterns fished across and down but did not move a fish (except a couple of Salmon parr) for three hours.
I resorted to plan "b" and fished nymphs in the slower water and had nine Grayling all around the 1lb mark, all were in good condition and returned to fight another day. All took a gold headed nymph size 14 fished along the river bed. By the time I finished around 1900 hrs my hands were very cold.

Work keeps me away from the water for most of the summer so it was good to be able begin my autumn/winter season. I fished from 10 - 4.
The water level was lower than any other visit I have made and the vegetation on the banks taller! In fact this was the first time I could safely fish the very last pool of the beat which is surprisingly deep. Despite favourable weather conditions I could count the amount of rises I saw on one hand despite a good deal of insect activity. Nothing much occurred until late morning when I found 3 trout and one very fit grayling , all around 10", from a pool that I have never caught anything in before!! All on a 16 Adams. Thanks again to all at WUF

River low but in good condition, apart from sewage fungus on stones, at top end. Water temp around 13C. Air temp around 17C.
Started at 11.30am to find one or two fish rising very gently in a localised hatch of very small olives. Caught 2lb trout on small parachute Adams. Thereafter, very little insect life and everything went quiet for the rest of the day. Fished dry daddy long legs in likely looking spots. Caught two modest trout and lost two much better ones on strike (should have used heavier leader with larger fly). Tried nymph to no avail.

Fished afternoon til dusk in the mill pool swim which had a nice depth as the river was low, watch out for a hidden snag to the right of swim ,snapped out on it a couple of times, cast a little more left. Had 4 barbel, 2 chub and lost a couple on pellet and feeder tactics. Nice stretch in lovely surroundings.

River quite low, but good flow and colour. Weather dry, warm, overcast and calm. A lovely late afternoon and evening session with five barbel about 4.5 - 7lb, all on halibut pellet and feeder. Couldn't have been better!

A blank i'm afraid but an enjoyable day on the river. I'm new to fly fishing rivers which may well of attributed to the nil return.
