Fishing:Trout (River)

This was my first experience of the Kington Wild Beat. As expected it has a similar feel to the top section of Hergest Court. There are some surprisingly deep pools. I had to work hard for my four trout (of 6-10 inches). The weather was bright, warm and still. The river was flowing swiftly and slightly coloured. In several hours I only saw one fish on the surface. Tried a variety of dries and some wets - not a sausage. All four fish came from broken water to weighted nymphs.

Excellent days fishing although very little surface activity. The nymph ruled until 9.30pm when a spinner fall made for good dry fly. Best fish 1.5lb. Most fish around 12oz mark.

Beat:Escley Beat 2

Very challening beat, I aged 10 years in the first 200 yards. No flies hatching or Trout rising. Navigation was difficult, I think next time I will take a device to get over the barbed wire fences.

Beat:Upper Cilieni

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Did top half of Upper Cilieni from parking. Cast rate pretty low due to undergrowth but all the same had a good day with quite a few trout to hand. Most quite small but just under half were 10" to 12". Decided to try out the Eithram stream included on the beat. Unfishable in all but three or four places due to undergrowth and fallen trees. There are fish in it and I found a couple of them. I also slipped and took an early bath!

Area:Middle Wye

Beat:Whitney Court

Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:2

Arrived at entrance to beat 2 (left bank) by old pump house, only to find bank access extremely limited by dense trees, bushes and very high, sheer banks. This really needs some work done in order to improve access. We crossed the toll bridge to the right bank where access is much better. Bull in field here with cattle but he was no trouble. River was in perfect condition but sadly our visit coincided with the hottest day of the year. The only salmon we saw were when four of them were disturbed by passing canoes. Didn't contact anything until evening when we caught and returned a trout each.

WUF note: The keeper would like to inform anglers that the left bank from the pump house is indeed precipitous and the trees are established and well looked after. The pump house pathway upstream and downstream are maintained and afford good access to the pools on the beat. Wading is essential to fly fish this beat and it is popular with most of the visiting anglers and syndicate members alike. The entire right bank is open grazing throughout the year and the banks are thus very clear and accessible. There is good gravel on the banks and wading again is good. Coarse and game anglers favour this beat because of the easy access.

Brown trout (9") on mayfly CDC emerger. River still significantly coloured (as predicted in earlier telephone conversation). Sporadic mayfly and other upwings in evidence but not much in the way of an evening rise.
