Beat:Whitney Court

Fishing:Coarse

River very clear and low throughout. The Early start was the best chance with a few good sized chub and a couple of 7 lb barbel in superb condition, taken in the fast water at the tail of beat 6. Only one other rod booked in and 3 miles of water.

Water very low moving at a snails pace! Decided from the off to fish single size 22 beadhead nymph and picked up 10 between 6 and 9 inches. Very few rising fish today. Those that were rising were spooked at the most delicate casts. It started raining heavily as I left and still is as I'm writing this at 9.30pm. Just what the doctor ordered.

Caught one trout on Dry Hopper. Most rises were too far to cover from bank. Also fished nymphs with no offers. Time for a boat I think!!

Very enjoyable despite much needed rain. 3 good size chub but alas no barbel. Great help from Terry who runs the fishery. Thank you.

I fished from 1.00pm - 9.30pm, unfortunately the second rod had to cancel. Initially a bit of a struggle in very low water and bright sunshine, but I donned the chest waders and found the shoals of barbel underneath far bank trees. Caught steadily enough through the afternoon and added another 7 or so in a manic last hour to finish with 16 Barbel. Another enjoyable day, thanks.

We turned up on this beat on Friday the 26 July, walked the whole beat. The Foundation sold us three permits and were unable to fish as there are only two fishable pegs there. I phoned the Wye and Usk Foundation and they said you might have to go through the brambles or bushes to fish. That's not a good enough answer when your paying twenty pounds per person to fish! The whole beat is overgrown. We fished Lower Hill Court on the previous Wednesday and we all caught barbel and chub, in tough conditions.

WUF note - We encourage anglers to read the catch returns for a beat before booking as there is a great variation in the types of beats available and the condition of the banks and bank side vegetation. Some anglers prefer the wild style of fishing and having to cut their own swims where as other anglers prefer ready made swims and better managed bank side vegetation.

Beat:Caradoc

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Caught one barbel in the morning down the bottom end on pellet to around 5lb, thereafter nothing. Very hard going due to low water levels and when a swim had enough water in it to suggest fishing, somewhere upstream they were weed cutting and large clumps of the weed meant that even the few areas that were fishable became impossible as bait couldn't be presented for more than a minute or two. So a return to the first swim surrounded by swimmers and dogs produced another 9 barbel to 10lb between 5 & 7.30pm, all on pellet. I will be back, but the whole river needs a push of water through it to get oxygen levels up.

Beat:Skenfrith

Fishing:Trout (River)

Returned to the Skenfrith beat at the end of our holiday and fished the evening rise - around 7:30pm to 9:45pm. Again no fish landed - weather still very hot and dry and extremely low water - but two takes missed, one to wet fly and one to dry. Reasonable numbers of small fish around.
