Very enjoyable despite much needed rain. 3 good size chub but alas no barbel. Great help from Terry who runs the fishery. Thank you.

I fished from 1.00pm - 9.30pm, unfortunately the second rod had to cancel. Initially a bit of a struggle in very low water and bright sunshine, but I donned the chest waders and found the shoals of barbel underneath far bank trees. Caught steadily enough through the afternoon and added another 7 or so in a manic last hour to finish with 16 Barbel. Another enjoyable day, thanks.

We turned up on this beat on Friday the 26 July, walked the whole beat. The Foundation sold us three permits and were unable to fish as there are only two fishable pegs there. I phoned the Wye and Usk Foundation and they said you might have to go through the brambles or bushes to fish. That's not a good enough answer when your paying twenty pounds per person to fish! The whole beat is overgrown. We fished Lower Hill Court on the previous Wednesday and we all caught barbel and chub, in tough conditions.

WUF note - We encourage anglers to read the catch returns for a beat before booking as there is a great variation in the types of beats available and the condition of the banks and bank side vegetation. Some anglers prefer the wild style of fishing and having to cut their own swims where as other anglers prefer ready made swims and better managed bank side vegetation.

Caught one barbel in the morning down the bottom end on pellet to around 5lb, thereafter nothing. Very hard going due to low water levels and when a swim had enough water in it to suggest fishing, somewhere upstream they were weed cutting and large clumps of the weed meant that even the few areas that were fishable became impossible as bait couldn't be presented for more than a minute or two. So a return to the first swim surrounded by swimmers and dogs produced another 9 barbel to 10lb between 5 & 7.30pm, all on pellet. I will be back, but the whole river needs a push of water through it to get oxygen levels up.

Returned to the Skenfrith beat at the end of our holiday and fished the evening rise - around 7:30pm to 9:45pm. Again no fish landed - weather still very hot and dry and extremely low water - but two takes missed, one to wet fly and one to dry. Reasonable numbers of small fish around.

Fished Sugwas Court on a really hot day with very low river conditions. It wasn't till after lunch we started to catch, first off was an Eel of about 2lb then a Barbel which was 5lb 14oz (my friends first ever so well done) then a Chub maybe a couple of pound. Mid afternoon I got my first a Barbel, 7lb 3oz then next chuck in a Barbel 8lb 5oz followed by a Chub again around 2lb. A little later on another Barbel 5lb 13oz, so a good day in all. Many thanks and what a stunning river, wildlife and scenery.

Last day of a 3 day visit and once again bright hot sunshine and a gin clear river. All the barbel were caught on halibut pellet from the swims on the beach.
The fish were starting to feed well as we were packing up, at approx 5.30pm and we are certain that by fishing into late evening a lot more fish would be caught.
