Full up river with lots of colour, access to wade very limited. It was out with the heavy nymphs, success, one small grayling after a couple of hours. A good day.

-4 when I arrived but still managed 1 small Pike to the lure. Always a pleasure to fish this beautiful river. Will be back again soon for the bigger ones hopefully.

12 x grayling 8-15 inches, 1 x out of season trout 11 inches, long trotting. The river was at 2 feet on the Llanstephan gauge, pretty high though running clear, but the air temperature was oh so cold. And cold air as such I can put up with, but rod ring icing on the retrieve after every trot down is incredibly frustrating. At the moment, with the river's water temperature relatively warm, it's possible to de-ice by submerging the rod for a few seconds, then, while the float goes on its way, giving the rod a sharp tap to knock off the water droplets before they freeze in the rings again. After Christmas, when the river temperature gets down to 4 degrees or even less, that won't be possible. Today the BBC forecaster promised us above zero temperatures around lunchtime, but they didn't materialise where I was fishing!

River had just about fined down after a flood the day before. Chilly, but a beautiful day. Didn't start fishing till midday and explored the lower end of the beat. Lovely contrast to the top of the fishery - slower, with more gravel. Trotting maggots with a rod and centrepin I landed 5/6 grayling and a couple of trout. Magic place, you're missing out if you've never been here.

River low and clear. Freezing start to the day. Warmed up with rain late on. Fished trotted maggots and found a few grayling, one over 2lbs - stunning fish. One other was well over a pound, the other perhaps 8oz. A few trout caught but not as many as expected. All in super condition, handled with care and returned swiftly. Very enjoyable day. Thank you WUF.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

23 x grayling 8-16 inches, 14 x out of season trout 6-14 inches, trotting. A very cold day with the river really high, 2 foot 9 inches on Llanstephan gauge, but running clear. It was a matter of finding a quiet run which could be fished near the bank without drowning self in the process. Grayling were on the feed, but also greedy post-spawning trout were pushing in where they were not wanted. Late afternoon came one of the most prolific large dark olive hatches I can remember seeing, although temperature only just above freezing.
