Fished beadhead through the entire beat as fish were very reluctant to rise all fish were taken in heads of pools and faster glides. Due to water levels being so low those fish in more open areas were spooked at the slightest movement. All fish were between 6-9 inches . There was a decent shoal of dace and I took one of those and also saw several perch. Not sure if Cannop ponds hold these fish but pretty sure that's where they are from.

Cold northerly wind but a bright sunny day with the river needing what looked to be about a foot of water, didn't seem to be the right combination for catching the spotty one!
My first trip out was nevertheless an enjoyable experience, with a nesting grey wagtail low down under the railway bridge an interesting find, and the many chiff chaffs voicing their approval that Spring is here(at last)...And so am i.

Some of the best looking areas to fish were unfortunately inaccessible - if these could be opened up I am sure catch reports could be improved.

This was without doubt the best days fishing I have had on the WUF beats. Beautiful stretch of river able to cast from the bank into some of the deep pools.Bright cold windy day. Red Kites overhead. Not much happening till I reached the island at the bottom of the beat.Sat on the bank at the bottom end of the island where the faster water runs into a calm pool.Suddenly a hatch of olives ( I think) Fish going ballistic. Put on a Klinkhamer with adams hackle caught 8 in about 20 minutes. Mostly half pounders. 2 however were over 2lb, one of which was nearer 2 1/2 lb. Hatch stopped as suddenly as it started. Calm returned to the river. Went back to the car for late lunch. Returned to same spot. Bingo another hatch. Caught 2 more 1/2 pounders. By now it was so windy it was almost impossible to put the fly in the right spot. Hatch stopped again. Fantastic day. Thanks WUF.

An interesting days fish on a lovely beat.
There was very little activity early on but at around 1pm
a few Olives started to come off the water and fish started to look up, ended up with 3 fish all on dries; March Brown and CDC dun. Best fish was about 16" with a bigger fish seen but not risen.
A good day.

Clear and relatively high water and bright skies, and not a sight of a salmon all day. Two decent chub (would have been great on the right tackle, but not so much fun on a 15' salmon rod).
Lovely water. Apart from around the pools/runs just above and below footbridge it seems most of it fishes best from the left bank (for a fly), this could be clearer in the beat details.

2 Chub
