Beat:The Rectory Fishery

Fishing:Salmon

Fishing the Rectory in near perfect conditions again is becoming a rather nice habit this season.
Being 4 nil down to the other rods at lunch time I decided to tackle the bottom of the beat. I decided to wade/scramble between the pools fishing the obvious places and runs when I was rewarded with a grilse of 5-6lbs. It was aken on a black and silver sunray from below the big rock in the "Run". Not the easiest place to land a fish and no chance of chasing a big fish up or down stream. Having worked down the rest of the beat which was full of little brownies I took the wise option and walked up the bank and along the edge of the fields feeling really chuffed that I was still dry and still had an intact rod. Another great day and a jolly good lunch in the Bridge pub.

Beat:Middle Ballingham & Fownhope No.8

Fishing:Coarse

No. of Anglers:2

The river was a good height and colour with level slowly falling throughout the day. We fished from 9am to 4pm burnt off the bank by the unrelenting sun in our faces (don't complain). Total catch 6 barbel and one chub taken by one rod all on feeder fished pellet.

Dawn at the head of the rock pool with a Heron on the large rock downstream, 3 young otters swimming past, even a few salmon showing lower down, then that wonderful ZZZ and into first Wye Salmon for a few years! Catching another later on in the "Run" at Mid day in bright hot sunshine was just smug. Wife and baby joined me for a picnic lunch. A glorious day. Thank you to the other friendly and helpful rods and also WUF!

Area:Usk

Beat:Penpont

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:2

This would be our first visit to Penpont. The advice given, by staff at the Wye & Usk Foundation, was to fish with small'ish flies. Such advice proved spot-on, we fished a variety of Nymphs - mostly size 16 and 18, and caught a total of six hard-scrapping brown trout.
Best pattern was the humble 'Hares ear beadhead', although a nice 16 inch brownie fell to a self-fashioned 'Plongo-grub' - a simple twisted white wool abdomen / seal hair thorax pattern.

Most of the fish were taken downstream of the main bridge - three in particular being taken from a beautiful 40 metre glide. Plenty of white water throughout the beat so, unless you know the beat reasonably well, it really does pay dividends to study each section carefully rather than just walk on by. I spotted a few nice trout lurking in difficult-to-reach slacks; I also managed to spook each of these fish with my less-than-accurate casting technique, otherwise I may have caught a few more.
