Very tricky to wade. Very dificult stream at the bottom.
Some of the pools are deep indeed. Two trout caught and released, 6 inches with dry-fly. Good day and very nice place, difficult but nice.

River and weather good on the Saturday with boat traffic to carnival levels. Fished for chub on the float and flake - caught 6 and then when the canoes stopped coming down, caught three barbel at the end of the day to seven and a half pounds on pellet. Many thanks to D.B. from Winchcombe for his instruction. I hope to meet him on the bank one day.

Day 1 of 4 on WUF stretches. River was still very low. Fished a number of swims between 7am - 12pm, but only managed 1 eel. Returned to fish the evening with better results. 5 Barbel all around the 5lb mark.
Some well cut out pegs, but much of the stretch (including what looks like the best part) is inaccessible. If we return it will be with shears, rope and a large stake!

Arrived mid-morning with the intention of fishing into late evening. Fished approximately mid beat. A lot of weed coming down the river which was a nuisance. However, I caught 5 barbel to 9lbs plus 3 chub to 4lbs including weed. Session cut short mid evening due to thunder storm.

On way to see booked rods saw large pike chasing fish in shallows by 30mph exit sign, rushed home for rod! Second cast with large spoon (about 40yrs old) hooked and after a great splashing scrap in shallows brought to feet a 42/43 inch pike (26/28lbs?), unhooked in water.
River now 1ft above last week BUT temperature 9 inch below surface was 23degC, several dead barbel seen last few days so what chance a salmon to recover even on catch and release?

My first visit to the lower part of this beat. I have fished Glanrhos stretch for about 12 years. River clear with the last bit of fresh fining down. Bright sunshine with a few clouds. Saw 5 fish rise all day, two of which pecked at my fly, none of which connected. A few needle flies about and small sedges but the fish were not interested,
Access: Right bank lower beat is best reached by walking down the road into village and going through the second field gate on the left. This will bring you out in the second field shown on the map at the start of right bank beat. Don't be tempted to go down the steps and gate on the RH side of the bridge which it leads to a barbed wire fence. The RH bank has trees all along its length so you need to wade out to avoid the trees. A mixture of rocks and gravel so wade with care
I did not try the LH beat. The path is above the river and looks difficult for casting
The LH upper beat is a joy to fish by comparison but a pity no rising fish. Looking at my fishing diaries for 2000 onwards there were few blank days. There were also two families of goosander's in residence. The scenery as ever is splendid Hope to try this beat again.
