5 x trout 7-10 inches, small Pheasant Tail Nymph under a Klinkhammer. Another of these "nothing much rising" days, although a few sedges were around and the first of the autumn large dark olives have begun, warm as it is. I mostly searched the pocket water at the bottom end with a New Zealand style set-up. Something larger came up to a dry fly in the Crawnon Pool at the very overgrown top end. I was hopeful for a few seconds, but it came off before I could get a look at it. I tend to regard this as not the easiest of middle/upper Usk beats - the wading certainly isn't - but probably one of the most beautiful. After a late lunch, sat in the sun outside the village shop with a coffee and an icecream. As far as the trout rod is concerned, that is probably "goodbye" to the Usk from me this year.

fished 16.00 to 19.00. Sunny day, ideal for trotting and a bit of fun so waded out to fish off bottom end of island and fished down the fast gulley under the willows. Sweet corn on 12 hook under an overshot chubber type float, centre-pin to light avon type rod. 5 chub, 2 to 3lb and 6 barbel all 2 to 4lb. Bites ceased when sun went behind trees and light ledger then tried to no avail.
While these fish are not large by Wyebank standards they were great sport in the heavy flow. This year has seen a large increase in numbers of barbel from 2 to 4lb. 10years ago there were only large barbel present and only the last 2 years have these smaller fish started to show so we can be confident that the large barbel commonly caught in this area have another generation coming on. There have been several chub over 6lb caught recently but anglers are disapointingly not returning reports.

1'9" falling, clear.
Perfect height, and a few salmon showing throughout, but no joy!
As always these days-difficult/impossible to cover all the lies.
1X 1lb Brownie in superb condition.

Not fished this stretch before arrived on a very hot & sunny day to find a low & slow moving river. Dropped in at the top end of the stretch at some well fished pegs, however it was slow going and moved further down to the rocky faster water. Nice to see the owner on this stretch - first time I have seen an owner or Bailiff on any stretch, nice touch.
3 Rods after a tough day caught 2 Barbel & 2 Chub. The good news is my Barbel wieghed a magic 10lb & the other 9lb 4oz. Pellet & paste did the trick.

Worth the trip to see the dawn breaking on such a beautiful day. Casting a salmon fly on the estate's lovely pools was a treat, but didn't see a salmon at either dawn or dusk.
Trout were unimpressed by the the 26 degree heat but humoured my tungsten beaded usk naylor by giving it a little tug now and then. Missed many more than hooked but ended up with a 3/4 lb stockie, then 4 wbt, 4-8 ozs. Slept well after such a full day.
Once again, thanks to wuf and glanusk staff. Last chance saloon Chainbridge next week!

4 of us fished from 9.00am until 7.00pm for only 7 barbel, however the quality of the fish was good & went from 6 to just under 10lb, all caught on small pellet with a mixture of feed. The weed was a problem & clear sky's didn't help. A strange stretch, needed a bit more water & would certainly fish much better in good conditions.
