A tough day for me on water that was in perfect order with other rods able to winkle a fish or two out. Tried alsorts and it would have been advisable to fish between 8-10pm but the drive home forced me away. Great beat which I will get a fish from. Thanks WUF.

Beat:Moor Pools

Started off on the Lower Pool, but could only get small rudd on maggot;had no bites on sweetcorn or bread. Moved to the Top Pool in the afternoon. Spent half an hour with the rake, clearing a swim. Only had 2 rudd from here. There were a lot of fish showing in a clear spot, but could not cast to it. I think the pool needs the weed cleared before it gets too bad in the Summer.

River absolutely in perfect condition, 1 ft on the Ganusk gauge is just right. I had 14 browns from 6in to 12in on addams dry. I fished from the bridge up river to the first pool - a nice place to fish not to difficult a bank to fish from. A nice spot is by the bridge up stream to wade out a little way so as you can cast under the trees, there are a few fish always there and all so in mid river. Can't believe there was no rain here to mess things up.

I had 2 trout first thing from the bridge pool on comparadun Mays whilst waiting for a friend. We fished mainly the upper half of the beat and caught a number of trout all on dries - best about a pound. There was some colour in the river but fish rose here and there to mayflies mainly. Another very enjoyable day on the Monnow.

Water .96m and reasonable clear. Fished for salmon with black and gold FC from top of beat through to below the Chine. Some trout rising to sedge/mayfly but no salmon seen or landed. Landed 2 trout to 1.5lb on no12 white wulff dry, and also a large 20" brown at the Chine on 26gm fc.
Constant light rain became heavy at 5.30 so packed up at that time. Will fish well rest of week.

Having travelled to Monmouth specifically to fish, I was concerned that the rivers would be too high. Having walked along the Monnow on Sunday, realised it would be ok. Fished during the drizzle, as the fish were rising well. All 5 brown trout were caught on Mayfly. Missed many fish. The hook ups were better in the faster water, rather than the slow bends, where the fish rapidly rejected the fly. Access to the river seemed impossible at the beat start, but from the campsite it was good. Caught a 4", 5", 10", 12" and finally a 13" near the top of the beat.
