Only 3 fish from 2 rods, a nice small chub & 2 juvenile chub. The conditions seemed perfect and we caught the first fish within an hour using a feeder & sweetcorn on the hook. It is an attractive piece of river & I'm sure has good fish in it. Wished we brought waders as the majority of the swim is inaccessible. Weeds are also a problem so take ledgers & feeders that are less likely to snag. We will be back, but with different tackle.

Well I’m glad this hasn’t been my first season as I might have put the rods on ebay by now. Nursing a sore head from over indulgence at the Welsh beer festival I arrived to what looked like a promising start, some rain to freshen up the river, bright ish day but with plenty of cloud, the odd gust of wind but nothing to worry about.

Waded across to the left bank and started fishing the Gravelly Pool then worked my way up the lh bank of the Gravelly Run. Then switched to some pocket water on the rh bank of the Gravelly Run. Not a sniff of a fish, none seen rising, despite some flies coming off the water. Fished the Cillau Run, got one snatch from a small fish, didn’t connect. Finally got an 8 inch WBT on a hare’s ear emerger in some pocket water above the cillau rocks.

Returned to the beer festival, my recollection of the rest of the weekend is a bit hazy I must admit. Excellent service as ever from the W&UF team, a pleasure to deal with.

Bit of a struggle to begin with. Hooked and landed a barbel within half hour of arriving then the swim went dead. I gave it another couple of hours but could not tempt any more fish so I moved up towards the shallower water. Found a likely looking spot, but only managed to tempt 4 chub. Very interesting wading around in the water, baited up a shallow clear spot and found a barbel feeding there an hour later, left it to it. Moved back down river and there was some fish in the first swim finished with 6 chub and 8 barbel.
I should perhaps mention that the swim I fished looked like somebody else had fished it recently but I don't think this stretch has had many bookings lately, poachers perhaps?

Beautiful conditions at Wyesham with silver bars showing everywhere, some big beasties too. Fished from very early morning with little action until early afternoon, took a 5.5lb cock grilse on silver stoats tail size 12 (dbl) just below the iron bridge. In excellent condition.
My first ever salmon and has only served to feed the addiction!
Thanks as always to the WUF but also to the ghillie Ray Morris who was incredibly helpful with tips and guidance.

Sporadic rising fish rather than a rise. Water low and clear enough to occasionally see a grey shape materialise out of nothing, lift and clip the fly off the surface. Thus a mixture of tactics ( nymph, emerger, full dry) results in 2 brown and 6 grayling to 12". Pretty cool for August and a whiff of Autumn.

The last day of our 3 days on the wye, Caradoc is a beautiful part of the river with wonderful wildlife, and when we were not watching various hawks, kingfishers, and finches we found time to TRY and catch a barbel.
As we have fished the beat before we thought we knew where and how to catch them, but as with the 2 previous days locating the fish was the hard part. We started on the gravel beach at the bottom of the beat and only managed one chub,we then spent the rest of the day fishing every peg until we found some feeding fish in the middle of the beat, and we each had 4 good barbel all between 7&8lb and 9 Chub to 4lb.The river is very low and clear and every one we spoke to said the river is fishing hard, BUT in our 3 days fishing, by traveling light and roving about we have caught 61 barbel and 27 chub between 2 of us. What a great holiday and MANY thanks to W.U.F for a wonderful service

Arrived at hut and approached the river via the first slope on Wood Stream. A salmon showed at 7.00am about 30-40 yards below the bridge on the right bank. At summer level the flow below the bridge is not perfect for the fly rod so set up spinning rod to tackle the salmon (and others?).

On previous trips have spotted salmon holding in the deep water along this right bank. Concentrated on the first 150 yards below the bridge, wading whenever possible. Also fished quickly at various points along the rest of the beat. From the bridge down saw a busy mink, several kingfishers and a cormorant. Spent last 1/2 hour of my 3 hours fishing for trout on the fast water at Wood Stream
- 3 small trout caught on nymphs and returned. Seems to be a resident family of 7 gossander near Rock Pool.

Stayed Panty Goitre Farm Cottages ( highly recommended ) on family holiday - took in Monmouth Show and rainy day at Cardiff Bay.

WUF Note: Anyone spotting cormorant, goosander or merganser are requested to record it on the Angling Trust website - http://www.cormorantwatch.org/

Slow going this morning with only three bites which produced a good Chub of 4lb 6ozs and two Barbel, the best going 8lb 13ozs. Reading other reports suggests that evening may be more productive.
