Back on the Wye and Usk beats for second trip of the season.
Fished with my son today and had a very enjoyable day in warm sunshine. The river was low and clear and fish were more difficult to temp during the day than on my previous trip but the fish were feeding hard for the last hour before dusk and we finished with 30 Barbel and 21 Chub between us.

This was my fourth day of the season so far and my tally is now 110 Barbel 53 Chub. What a fantastic river the Wye is, thank you W&U for making it possible.

The start of the day 11am, very low cloud and over cast! River very low and no fly activity. 25mtrs from the start of the beat had several takes which I missed, then a fine wbt 30cm 3/4lb and a great fight in the fast glide. Missed several more takes fishing NZ style with a GHE. Then out came the sun which brought on the LDOs and sedges. Change of tactics but still to no avail, these fish I'm sure are just sucking and leaving. It's now 14-30 I'm back to NZ style and another small wbt. Packed up at 15-30, a lovely day in a fantastic location.
Thanks to the W&U team.

1 Barbel at 9.2, fishing two swims down from the power lines. Fishing the far bank, using meat (luncheon) over hemp, under the willow trees. Fishing this beat not brilliant because the only swim worth fishing was Boys Rocks - but of course this is no longer available due to resident objections.

River very low and clear. Fished from 6.45 to 12. Took 5 barbel fishing pellet over a big bed of hemp. 4 fish between 4 and 5 ish pounds. Best fish was an absolute belter of 9lb 6oz. Plenty of other bites.

Canoe traffic was much lighter than I was expecting and to be honest the fish didn't seem to mind them. I even had bites when the canoes were directly over the fish. Mostly the canoeists were well behaved but for 2 morons paddling one canoe who thought it great fun to paddle directly towards drinking cattle and hit them in the faces with their paddles!

Nil catch at Wyesham, water very low and bright sunshine all day. One Salmon spotted in Viaduct, lept clear out of the water, early in the day. Lots of Canoe activity and dog's chasing sticks thrown in the water, but I guess better Salmon fishing conditions (cloudier, cooler weather) keeps some of this activity to a minimum, especially on a weekday.

Beat:R48 Dore at Chanstone Court

Fishing:Trout (River)

Blank. I don't think I chose well, opting to fish this brook on a bright, warm, August afternoon. The Dore is currently very low and this beat is very overgrown now. I came across just two rising fish, pricked one (a grayling)and missed the other (a trout). I hope the rod who came along for the evening as I was finishing fared better.

Fishing very slow due to the river being gin clear and very low. During the day best to keep moving and try to spot the fish (either that or go to the pub !) we saw them flashing in a nearside gulley between the weed and one of us had 3 barbel out during the day. Evening is when the fishing picks up with a total of 10 barbel to 4 rods.
