The river was up a foot or so and carrying a tinge of colour. It looked good. However, the fish weren't as enthusiastic as us and it was a slow morning. We bumped into the other anglers sharing the beat and they complained about the lack of swims. It's not a problem we have at Caradoc, there's too much choice for us! We fished hard and were eventually rewarded with a barbel each and a smattering of chub, including the same fish falling to my rod twice in an hour! A difficult day.

Beat:R3 Rhayader AA, River Elan

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

1 x trout 6 inches, 2 x grayling 7 inches and 14 inches on dries. I avoided the floods by fishing the Elan tailwater below the dams, but didn't have much success until I reached the steeper gradient at the top of the beat where just a couple of good fish were rising. I caught one and missed the other! A beautiful-looking piece of river, especially with the autumn colurs coming on.

Beat:R8 Cammarch Hotel Water

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:2

Having been unable to fish Abernant the day before made our way nervously from our B&B in Hay (The Bridge, highly recommended, very good value) only to find the Wye as angry as the day before.

I know from past experience that the Irfon clears quicker than most other parts of the system so headed up to the Cammarch Hotel beats.

A warm welcome as ever from hotel's owner, Catherine, and some sobering advice - are you mad????

Again, river Irfon very swollen and coloured. Fished the Upper Beat in the morning and landed two pristine wbt 10" - 12" at the tail of the pool right at the bottom of the beat. Both fell to a weighted red tag to cope with current and colour and were returned safely.

Moved to the lower beat in the afternoon but only managed a small wbt as the conditions worsened. My brother-in-law unfortunately blanked but we both had an enjoyable session in spite of the conditions being stacked against us.

A very big thank you to Catherine at The Cammarch Hotel for the loan of the wading stick, invaluable and now on my Christmas list!
