Beat:Monnow Valley

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Three small browns caught and released safely, each around 10". Two to an olive sedge and one to a PTN. All taken sub-surface in pools downstream of riffles. No rises seen. Exhausting beat - access remains very difficult with probably only a third of the one mile of river fishable. Best water is upstream of parking spot. I wouldn't fancy it when the brambles and undergrowth have taken hold later in the year.

Beat:R61 Cannop Brook

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

4 wild browns - 3~7 inches
Lost 5 or 6 more in the 3hr session
Caught on Redneck PTN, fished klink n dink method.
Great little brook, but needs lots of work. Too many fallen trees and wood debris in places, not to mention the number of wooden pallets, car tyres and other litter in the stream.
Lots of small fish around which is promising for the future with some river/habitat management.

A very hard day was had, I caught a trout in 1st half hour and my friend had 2 grayling. This was a very hard beat but weather was lovely so it wasnt all bad. Seen about three or four small fish top all day and 2 mink in the bottom wier! On the whole a nice beat but only really found half dozen decent swims in the conditions. Think will venture back to the Usk next time. Paul

Blank. This beat is often kind to me in the early season, but not this year. I never saw a fish.

First time on this beautiful beat, and I look forward to returning in May. An unseasonably warm and sunny day, and a decent hatch of LDO's and March Browns in the middle of the day, but sadly, I did not see a single fish rise all day, and after several changes from nymphs to dry to wet, there was not the remotest hint of a fish.

A beautiful place but I found it quiet in relation to fish activity. 4 grayling caught on a brown klinkhammer down off the planks at the lower end of the beat. Around 1.5lb each.
Not much activity in the evening when the magic hour brings them all up. It was made worse by my clumsiness falling in and getting soaked too! A wading stick is a must, along with spare clothes!
