Lovely half day fishing this very picturesque beat. There were fast flowing swims, as well as deeper slower swims. I found the fish in the fast water, and luncheon meat bounced down the swim was the method. Not a touch on any other method - they wanted a moving feast. Caught two beautiful Barbel, one just over 7lb, and the second was 8lb +. Also lost two other barbel. To round the session off caught a PB chub, 5lb 2oz. Will return…????

Fished from 6.30 to 14.00. 2 good barbel - one just on 8 lbs and one around 5 lbs. Also lost 2 good fish. I started fishing in the 2nd swim of the upper section - there is a nasty submerged branch just downstream extending quite a way out - just passing this on for information. I didn't find any chub although you could see plenty in the shallow fast water on the lower section

Beat:Fenni Fach

Fishing:Trout (River)

Fenni Fach is a lovely beat although I only got to fish about half of it. There’s lots of interesting water to go at. Most of my fish came to nymphs fished in the riffles but I did manage a couple on a small DHE on one of the flats. Waders beware: there are some very deep sections about halfway up the beat.

Having lost a decent salmon on the Wye yesterday, it was a case of getting back on the horse today albeit on a very shrunken river Usk. Managed to tempt one to the surface in the clear water with a Greenwell but the only way to get their attention seemed to be by presenting a nymph tight to the bank under overhanging foliage. Needless to say my fly box will need a bit of replenishment. Almost exactly a year ago I had a fabulous days fishing here with the trout on the take for hours on end, but it was pretty dour today. The thundery conditions didn’t help, heavy showers during a challenging days fishing.
