Given the weather forecast, I abandoned my plans to fish the last day of the season. Conditions looked perfect: overcast, a gentle breeze and the river freshened up by a little recent rain. No sign of any fly hatch so fished the fast oxygenated runs at the bottom of the beat with a PTN. Did nothing. The reason became apparent when Mr Lutra Lutra popped his head up right in front of me. Moved up above the bridge where a steady hatch of olives and iron blues (?) occurred from around 13:00 to 15:00. Persevered with dry fly imitations even though very few rises were showing. Switched back to nymphing when the hatch ended but finished with a blank day. Sums up the 2022 season for me!

A tough day, stretch seemed a bit lifeless for much of it. JC caught a couple of barbel to 6lb, a chub, a 2-5 perch and an eel. BT managed a solitary chub. Several swims fished during the day from the pool on the bend down to deeper swims in the next field but just picked up odd fish here and there.

Wonderful stretch of the Wye this with some Incredible water to go at. Kingfishers all day long and the amazing horses coming to greet you for a drink by the river. Not to mention the red kite making a noise all day which was amazing to see.
Pretty much caught throughout this stretch until dusk starting above the suspension bridge and working my way down towards the tail end where I caught plenty on the float.

The water was clear, and the river level was lowish. The weather was warm and sunny with some cloud. I walked and fished the whole length of the upper part of the beat, I saw no fish at all, no rises, and I didn't spook any either, I was wearing Polaroids and moving quietly. I fished the deep pools using a beaded nymph but had no interest there either. There were signs of otters. I also saw a few, but very few, spricks. The three birds a fisherman hopes to see; dipper, grey wagtail, and kingfisher were all present.
