Having said it would be a while before I came back to this beat, I only had a short window to fish and this is the closest grayling stretch to me so returned a week later ( also partly because I realised from looking at OS maps that I had not reached the end of the beat on my previous visit). I fished the up stream half of the beat using the NZ nymph method, still challenging wading but found one grayling about 8 inches on a pink tag with a tungsten bead head.

Cold and crisp to start, with a bright blue sky but once the sun went in it got cold pretty quickly. I’d recently seen good reports from this beat, but it was a slow day for me, and disappointing in the end (especially as the waders I thought I had fixed still leaked!). Just one 7-8” Grayling (on nymph) early on, and then nothing after that. Interestingly the Grayling was followed-in almost to my feet by a larger WBT. I’d never seen this kind of thing before. I thought that my mind was playing tricks on me, because it looked like I’d hooked two fish at once! The trout, spooked, eventually sped off.

There was a good amount of water, pretty deep in some places. I’ve fished here before and it can be tricky to get into the river. Lots of debris around from last year’s storms I guess, and this years high rainfall. Great to be out on the river again.

Tricky day today and no fish caught. Tried everything possible and lots of nymphs in the deeper pools too, but today wasn't the day.

Couldn’t entice many grayling again today with the river at 2’ 1” and still carrying some colour. Fish came to the usual weighted nymphs and bugs, but there were none over 10”.

River at 2' with a tinge and strong current. Fish came to zugbug and pink goldhead. Off-season 1lb trout and 8"grayling . Good to squeeze in a session before predicted strong winds and rain up there.
