Fishing:Trout (River)

My first visit to this lovely beat on a grey and rather wet morning. I spent much of my time walking to the beginning of the beat and clambering up and down banks! Just above the bottom weir I caught a 9" Brownie on a tungsten PTN. The bottom half of the beat is fairly overgrown and might be easier to fish in chest waders? Next time I shall cross the bridge and try the top half of the beat from the opposite bank which looks more approachable.

My first visit to this beat and probably my last as it is so difficult to wade what with low trees, deep pools and high banks not to mention the overgrown banks. I had very little time on the water but fished the first narrow section from the bank and took a 6" Brownie on a size 14 Hackled Brown Midge.

An outstanding days fishing! Having struggled on other beats the previous couple of days, the fish were rising to my dry (parachute adams) all day. Lost count of how many fish were landed, two of which were 3lb plus, and lost several more. Penpont never fails!

We had an excellent day on this challenging beat last year so a return was definitely on the cards. The weather really couldn’t make its mind up today with alternating cold intervals – including showers – and warm spells.
There was plenty of fly life about – sedges, olives, conspicuous yellow mays and mayflies, which the fish haven’t woken up to yet. We fished dries all day for 14 trout and 1 grayling – the best trout came in the evening when the sun had come out for a golden sunset, and measured 12” – despite the fact that they were all plump I suspect the total weight of the other 14 fish would not have tipped the balance against the 12 incher! So plenty of small ones which does not include the 2” minnow that somehow took a dry…
A few other fish bumped off including a couple of other decent ones. The peregrines are resident again but no other significant wildlife observed.
Some days fishing stand out head and shoulders for different reasons – this beat is just great fun. Of and as for conventional dry fly wisdom – forget the dead drift, most of my fish took a skating fly!
