Area:Monnow

Beat:Skenfrith

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:2

A cold day, the air temperature never above 4 degrees all day, with no evidence of fly life or hatches. Water was 1ft on the gauge at Skenfrith bridge.
All grayling taken utilising the "Duo method" on the lower fly, a gold head PTN. The OOS WBT was taken on a heavy bug. Great fishery, thanks WUF. Just got recover from the cold...we'll be back!

20 x grayling 6-18 inches, Pink Shrimp. After rain before and around dawn, the Lugg was rather higher at 1ft 4.5 inches than I would have liked ideally. The faster pools at the top end were quite turbulent, which makes it difficult to control the nymphs. However, I did feel like a change from the Wye and the Irfon and as I never got to fish Eyton at all last winter due to the prolonged floods, I was keen to give it a try now. Once on the river, the day became much brighter, if colder, with a big wind blowing. 19 of the grayling caught were small, mostly shoats of 10 and 11 inches. However, the last one of the day, taken at sunset after a protracted struggle while it was boring into the depths, finally came to the surface to reveal itself as a bull of a cock fish, 18 inches, thickset and dark pewter in colour. This made a perfect end to a lovely winter day's sport. Every one of the fish took a Pink Shrimp, although more life-like nymphs were offered. Salmon present on the beat and, I'm sorry to report, so were cormorants.

2 of us fished beat 3 on Saturday and blanked. Heavy frost did not help. Returned Sunday (1 rod), fished directly below the island on beat 2 (LH bank) in the morning, no luck. Switched to RH bank in the afternoon and fished opposite the red brick building, 3 chub all around 3lb, 15 grayling and 2 oos brown trout. All taken on float fished maggot.
Fished the feeder in 2 separate periods with pellet/corn/caster and no bites.

A very chilly day on one of my favourite stretches and a big fat blank for me but a few chub for the chap that I took along. We did see a few chub showing on dark but the barbel didn't play ball this time. I will be back next summer.

Paid visit to Brelston for first time. Access still difficult but water level was good. Trotting produced one bite which fought well but slipped off before it could be landed. Will return.

Arrived at 8am following a 3 hour drive, greeted with a temperature of -4. Cooked up some bacon rolls and headed down to the river. This is a really beautiful setting which added to the excitement. My second ever quest for grayling, last time I had 2 so I just wanted to better that. Tactics for the day would be trotting with the centrepin on a light action rod. I arrived at the first tempting spot (having waders would've made a lot more of the stretch accessible for me and will be my next investment) as I was setting up I started feeding some maggots, and first run through I was straight into a grayling, a nice fish getting towards 1lb and already I had a new personal best. Had 3 more small grayling and then the sun came through the clouds and it went quiet. I left my gear and had a walk down the stretch and found another tempting spot. I walked back for my gear, but as the sun had gone in I thought I'd have another try before I moved, and a great decision it turned out to be. Started catching instantly and then lost a couple of fish, 1 looked to be approaching 2lbs so I was gutted that the hook pulled by the net. Next run through I was into another good fish, and slipped the net under a huge grayling, approaching 3lbs. I couldn't have been happier. That swim went dead so I headed down the the other spot, and caught a small trout straight away. After stealing feeding, I managed to interest some grayling and had a number of fish, a couple well over 1lb. That went quiet so for the last hour I headed back to my original spot, had a few more small grayling, a 2lb trout and the last run through had another big grayling at 2lbs. Over the moon with my return. All fish put up a really good account of themselves, seen beautiful pink salmon jumping, had a robin for company all day and all of the dog walkers on the far bank were very pleasant. An all round perfect day, couldn't have wished for more. Can't wait for my next outing!

Tried, Czech nymphing and wet flies. Good water conditions just very cold (river frozen at banks) after a mild spell I think.
