Beat:The Rectory Fishery

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

For me, one of the best beats of the upper Wye, but tricky in parts to access all of it due to private gardens etc down to the riverbank. Need to criss-cross the river when the depth allows but don't be put off by this as the beat is just great with all different types of gravel runs with fast flow to deep pools with no flow at all so you really have it all on this beat. Wonderful. Thanks again WUF.

Guided R on the beat last year and he caught some huge barbel and he wanted a repeat session this year. I also guided him on Wyebank last year where he caught 32 barbel in a day!

He brought along his young lad Dominic for the day. Richard caught a good few chub and barbel. He even allowed his lad to land his first barbel of 6lbs 9oz. Richard landed a beautiful 8lbs 12oz barbel. Plenty of chub to 3lbs 12oz were landed. A few fish were lost due to the hook links being parted on sharp rocks.

As normal the fish came early in the morning and late in the afternoon. A great days fishing.

The Irfon was lower than last time I fished this beat more than two years ago, making wading easier in the bottom pool where I picked up two decent grayling on sedge imitations. Four others to 16 1/2 inches came from the top pool along with a small brown trout, mostly on a size 20 olive klinkhammer. Fish were rising sporadically all day, but with more enthusiasm and conviction as the day wore on, I had brief contact with four before the first came to the net.

River low and clear. Fished all day with pellet, both rods blanked. Busy with anglers on opposite bank, loud chatting.
Disappointing day but beautiful surroundings.

Area:Usk

Beat:Ashford House

Fishing:All Species (in season)

No. of Anglers:2

Fished an evening session with no success. Tried dry flies, nymphs and a combination of the two, NZ style. All to no avail.

A beautiful stretch of river marred by the frustratingly overgrown bank, which only allows very restricted view of the water. I lost my folding landing net while scrabbling up the bank (it's probably hanging in a tree!)and would appreciate anyone who finds it contacting the Foundation.

As mentioned by other anglers, Ashford House has a very overgrown sign on the road. It is the property directly opposite the canal tunnel with a large tarmacked car park in front of the house. Take the path to the right of a dwelling, heading towards the farmyard for access to the river.

As always, the booking office staff were very helpful in organising this fishing, which was very much a last minute decision.

Area:Reservoirs

Beat:Usk Reservoir

Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)

No. of Anglers:1

Blustery to dead still, lots of fish porpoising/showing when still. Overcast to broken cloud - warm water temperature. Fished 11am - 3:30pm. Nothing on the fly rod but 5 Rainbow trout (1-2lbs in weight) on multiple garden worms (on a size 10 hook) 5 foot under orange bubble float, 12lbs main line to 30cm 4lbs hook link. Lots of additional bites and nibbles, fishing 5-10m out from bank. Returned 3 fish. Kids thoroughly enjoyed safe and easy fishing near fishing permit booth/car park end of reservoir.

Two brown trout to 14 inches and eight grayling to 17.5 inches ,all on dry fly, small olive emergers or sedges. There was a good hatch of bwo and the odd large dark olive as well as plenty of sedge, fish were rising sporadically, but taking the fly confidently when they did. Spotted one cormorant flying downstream.
