Booked as a day's mayfly fishing for two of my regulars. There were very few mayfly about but plenty of BWO's. The guys had a great day catching 11 BT and about the same number of out of season Grayling.

River only 5 inches above summer level. Good day on dry flies using tupps and adams to land 7 trout of 7 oz to 1.25 lb mainly at or below the rock. Lost one over 2lb at the rock sill on an upstream cast tupps 14. Weather dry and overcast.

Booked to fish the Courtfield beat and Don Macer Wright kindly allowed me to fish Wyebank too. This is a beautiful pacey beat - perfect for fly with some interesting challenges. Saw a good salmon which appeared to be travelling through.
When the conditions are right I think this beat will be superb. Looking forward to fishing it again.

fished from about 7pm and expected to see some surface activity but there was little. Pricked four fish on an Adams and hooked but lost a reasonable fish in the tail of the second pool on the beat. Very windy evening with stormy showers. Chap fishing with spinner on the beat....thought it was fly only!
WUF NOTE: The other rod shouldn't have been there and this incident has been reported to the owner. This beat is fly only.

Even after a little rain last night the river is still very low. Very windy, almost gail force at times! and hence very little insect life on the wing. Three trout from the more sheltered spots on nymphs before the wind and the debris beat me.

Area:Usk

Beat:Fenni Fach

Fishing:Trout (River)

Heavy overnight rain meant the Usk had risen almost 1 foot and was very coloured. Add to that the downstream gale and it was hard going. Stuck with it – found the bottom stretches had more shelter and less colour - and managed 4 small trout, best 8 inches.
Thanks all, will see if I can negotiate another weekend when conditions are more promising.

Arrived at the river nice and early (5.15am). Intended to fish the double hander down Wyebank before the canoe traffic built up. Strange colour to the water so decided against the fly and fished higher up on the Courtfield beat on the flying C. Nothing doing. Eventually moved back down to Wyebank with the double hander and had two brownies on a silver cascade including 1 beauty of approx 1.5lb. By late morning the canoe traffic was getting out of hand and had two near misses. These people seem to fall into 3 categories. a) The courteous one's who do all they can to avoid anglers. b) The courteous one's who aren't capable of steering a boat and c) The downright rude one's who don't care about anyone else on the water. By late morning it was just too dangerous to be stood in the middle of the river. I have never seen so much traffic and reckon it's only a matter of time before there is a tragedy.
Moved back upstream in the afternoon and had 2 pike (biggest approx 8lb) and a plump shad (approx 1lb) spinning off Legg Meadow Crib. Top meadow was unproductive.
Many thanks to Don Macer-Wright for his tips and help. Will be back.

The water was very low, but muddy after rain in the night. Wind nearing gale force straight down the river made casting difficult. We saw no rises and there was no hatch to speak of. Not surprisingly nothing was taking and we left at 3.30.

No salmon but a good fish did show in the morning. Lots of Shad evident around Legg Meadow and Legg Meadow crib. Kept moving to avoid them but still accidental captures.
