My first experience of the WUF roving voucher scheme. Eight brown trout, varying between 6" and the best of 11". All taken on the dry, 1 on a size 16 black klinkhammer and 7 on a size 10 mayfly pattern. River very low but good sport nonetheless with mayfly lifting from the water in small numbers between 12pm and 6pm. A delightful little beat with plenty of trout! Very happy with the beat. I have posted some photos here if you are interested:

Arrived to find river as I expected, very low. Weather was mild but wind shouting hello.

2nd visit to this lovely beat and succeeded on what I considered difficult conditions given the water clarity and level. 4 brown trout, the best of around 10" on mayfly imitation. Fantastic hatch of mayfly mid afternoon resulting in fish starting to show in previously fishless looking water.

Actually forgot to leave feedback from my first visit a month or so ago but nothing to report with regard to catch. I did however spot from the footbridge the biggest grayling I have ever seen and infact had to look several times to determine it definately was a grayling. Having caught specimens on my local river Dove of over 2lbs, this fish looked considerably bigger and I must emphasise the considerably. I will be returning in the winter!

Cold, 15C. Very strong wind, making casting an effort. Concentrated on more sheltered areas, using small nymphs, with 3 small fish to 9 inches and one better fish of 2lbs. After 6 days fishing the middle beats of the Usk, our 2 rods took over 30 w.b.t. to 2.75 lbs, in less than ideal conditions due to strong winds and low water temperatures. I`m convinced we could have caught more in calm conditions; however I would recommend the trout fishing on the Usk to anyone.

Excellent spot but drew a complete blank today. No fish rising, and no takes using nymphs even in the fast flows. Water level low . Couple of fellow fishermen reported to me that they had been there the day before and again no takes.

Between 2 rods, 20 x trout 6-15 inches, 2 x out of season grayling 7-12 inches, 1 small out of season chub. Quite a lot of nice trout around 12 inches. Not very much hatching (yellow mays, a few mayfly late in the day) and not much naturally rising on a beat which is new to both of us. That cold wind was blowing again with intermittent showers! Spiders got a few in the fast water, but it turned out in the end to be a nice dry fly day as trout were prepared to come up to the artificial. I got most of mine on a sort of parachute Tups, which, looking for something with a yellow body, I nicked out of one of David's well-stocked fly boxes. It's nice to catch a trout on a fly one has tied oneself, but nicer by far on a stolen fly!

Otherwise, the odd showers of rain, while not raising the levels much, do seem to have tickled up the trout fishing a bit. Some of the lower and middle Usk beats, including Usk Town and Glanusk, are fishing quite well at the moment for both stocked and wild fish, although in the lower part of the river watch out for the shad which are now present in large numbers. A protected species, they will grab any kind of trout fly, nymph, wet or dry, even if you are already playing a trout on the dropper!

A most enjoyable day was had by both of us on our first day out as Wye & Usk members.

The recommendation of this beat by the booking offices was a perfect location for us with a wide variety of fishing opportunities from both banks and wading too.
We both had many bites but missed out landing any game mainly due to our inexperience of river trout fishing.
Locations to both sides of the bridge especially down stream where wading in boots was possible were very entertaining.

I'm sure we will be back to this beat in future months, with some more experience under our belts. Thanks.
