Lovely beat. Very pretty countryside. Good mayfly hatch every rising fish came to artificial mayfly. Caught two nice plump trout about half pound - each returned. Expected to see more fish but did see beauty in bend above bridge with bank with sand martins - must have covered it many times -bet it is uncatchable. Nice enough beat to go again. Plenty of good pubs for lunch close by.

1 brown trout 10" returned. GRHE Nymph.

1 x 4lb sewin (sea trout) and 2 x 3lb Chub caught by A.D. Trout caught at the start of the beat, the Chub in the pools by the rocks at the far end of the beat. 13 x Brown Trout of sizes 3/4lb to 2lb caught in the central part of the river.
WUF Note: a photo has confirmed this was almost certainly a sewin that had been in the river for a couple of weeks.

Similar conditions on both days, bright at times with occasional light rain. Not much hatching, never saw a rise. On the first day I caught a very small trout in a riffle on PTN, second day another two very small trout on Grey goose nymph.

2 x Penpont Porkers... 17" and 2lb in weight. Fantastic, lovely day. Thank you.

First time on this fantastic little stream, the access is a little difficult to say the least, at the start you need to slide down the bank to reach the water, then there is no way out except for the clamber up by the road bridge, l think the next visit will require a ladder. Now the most important bit the fishing, what can I say?! Stone fly, mayfly, and sedges all day long, and the fish did not stop rising. In all 16 trout to hand and as many missed, mostly small brookies to 8" with 1 cracker @ 14" 1.25lbs. I only fished the lower section up to the weir and went back down stream to lunch now 1.45 a bit late, then back to the start. fished till 5.45. I've never seen so many Mayflies clouds of them, the stream was carrying a little colour, but stealth is still the order of the day, and slow progress up stream covering all the water and I do mean all, trout were edge to edge.

My winter home ties seem to work so I'm well pleased.

A great days fishing was to be had on this very varied stretch of the Usk just upstream of Brecon.

I arrived shortly after 11am to a blustery downstream wind and water that was slightly more coloured than I had hoped for. Nonetheless I started fishing a team of nymph's upstream from the tail end of the 1st pool that I'd come across. Caught my 1st WBT of about 1lb within a dozen casts so was filled with optimism for the remainder of the days fishing - this fish was returned safely to the river.

I continued with the nymph set up for a further 4hrs bringing another 4 fish to hand and missing a whole lot more. All these fish were a bit smaller than the 1st but nice to catch. The fish falling to weighted and unweighted olive and pheasant patterns.

Despite the good sport that I'd had the day was made for me around 4 o'clock when a few fish had started rising, so to freshen things up for myself I changed to klink and dink tactics. I targetted a fish that I'd seen rising frequently and on the first pass an enormous swirl engulfed the klink and I struck. A 50yd upstream run followed, a couple of spectacular leaps added to the excitement, then it turned came back towards me and headed downstream where it held station. It was here that fate dealt me a cruel blow and the fly pulled free on a tight line and headed straight back towards me. I was left shaking for a while but equally happy that I'd been privileged enough to have had the experience. An estimate of size would put it around the 4lbs mark.

Caught another fish of about 3/4lb on this method and by 7pm very little was rising so called it a day at 8pm.

A happy man then got into his car and drove home already planning the next visit.

Weather less windy than previous days, and tree cover helped protect water. River the colour of hot chocolate, but reasonably warm, hence a variety of hatches. Plenty of fish rising, primarily under cover. Eventually took 2 Penpont porkers of 17in+ and lost a 3rd on suspender nymphs. Wonderful sport on light tackle necessary to get under trees. Wading necessary but relatively easy for an Usk beat. Had to leave early for home, but got takes from all rising fish, gutted to leave!

Wash off. Although not in spate showers had run off the road construction works immediately above beat to Newbridge on Wye making river colour of milky coffee and unfishable. Will be a problem for this beat for a while I expect. Above this river was perfectly clear went to Rhayader Association stretch caught 3 small trout. Not a big stock of fish here. Spoke to local fisherman out for walk with dog said not many fish in river in recent years.

10 Brown Trout taken and returned. Caught on Hares ears, PTN's, mayfly and blue winged olives.
