Water incredibly low and clear with little flow in the pools - in the "Grandstand" and by the church it was more like being on a lake or a canal, with trout seen cruising to take fly whilst we had lunch - good quiet wading practice! It did mean though that we could get to normally inaccessible parts of the river. Hardly any fly - a handleful of tail-end grannom, some olives, and one or two large brook duns. Very few rising fish, most of which turned out to be grayling. Not much to show for the day either, with just one trout of 1.25lb and seven grayling three of which were 15-16 inches. Fish taken on olive and hare's ear emergers and one on an olive nymph, mainly in deeper water with a bit of pace. Similar story on the Usk the previous day, with some good rising fish of up to 2.5lb taken on hare's ear and olive emergers, but nothing taken on spiders, very few fish rising and little fly apart from black gnats and a one or two tail-end grannom. Bring on the rain ASAP!

Four fish including a fat 19" - all returned. PTN did its job. Many thanks to David, the owner, for accommodating my change of plan.

Warm and sunny, river very low, just a dribble of fly life. No, not August but the middle of April. No really, what's going on!
In these poor conditions I was grateful for a fun and productive day. Keeping to the faster, broken water took 11 wbt and 1 out of season grayling. Typical wildies, 6"-10", all returned unharmed. Every fish fell to the weighted point fly (gold head ptn, green). No fish caught on my dropper (spider variants). Strange, my point and dropper usually share the fish.
There seems to be a really good head of trout on this beat and I know from experience that it is stuffed with grayling later in the year.
Thanks as ever to the WUF.

Hot bright day. Water levels low. Plenty of insect life but no surface activity from fish. Caught 1 grayling say 1/4 lb. High banks and what promises to be very high bankside vegetation will be challenging in 6 weeks to fish. Would return here with more water and cloudier day. Downstream end of beat sign hard to spot on roadside bank but its there.

Another beat recommended by Seth at the Foundation which gave another delightful day's fishing. 21 fish in total, mostly trout with a few grayling. The best trout was around 12". Again, the fish were most active early in the morning with several taken in the water below the Edw pool before the sun really got on the water. But they were feeding fairly steadily through most of the day and always offering a chance.
My wife was busy sunning herself by the river when two very noisy canoeists appeared out of nowhere - they were very politely given the Wye and Usk Foundation approved advice and were not seen again!

Sadly a nil catch again. Hugh saw a fish, I saw nothing and was wishing for an inch or two more of water. No worries will be back, hopefully with some fish about.
